Trump envoy’s remarks ignite outrage in Germany

President Trump’s top envoy in Germany has found himself in the middle of a diplomatic firestorm less than a month after being sworn in.

In an interview from his office in Berlin with the right-leaning Breitbart News, Richard Grenell made an acknowledgement unusual for a diplomat: he wanted to “empower other conservatives throughout Europe.”

“I absolutely want to empower other conservatives throughout Europe, other leaders. I think there is a groundswell of conservative policies that are taking hold because of the failed policies of the left,” Grenell said, adding that it was “an exciting time” to be serving as ambassador.

The blowback in Germany was swift.

The German Foreign Ministry requested that Grenell clarify his remarks; a top lawmaker with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives said he was at risk of becoming a “highly ineffective” envoy; and a cadre of left-leaning politicians demanded that Grenell’s credentials be withdrawn.

“What this man is doing is unheard of in international diplomacy,” Martin Schulz, the former leader of the Social Democratic Party, told Germany’s DPA news agency.

“The German Foreign Ministry requested that Grenell clarify his remarks;”

To clarify, he was trying to say that you and your government suck.

I agree but in Europe these days conservative means Right and that to them means neo nazi. Also while I for the most part support the President, I am under no illusions that he is a Tea Party conservative.

Hard to believe this Germany is the same Germany that wanted to take over the world 90 years ago. Night and day difference. While they were screwed up back then; at least they had a spine. Then again maybe only a few of them did and the rest were just followers.

Socialism is just everyone being equally miserable and poor. Why would anyone want that? At least with capitalism everyone has a chance to bootstrap themselves up and out of their situation or rise to a happy spot and stay there.

With these so called leaders of the free world the truth hurts. Trump will never find another leader like him in this so called free world.

They have political parties labeled “conservative”. Merkel and May lead “conservative” parties.

From what I can see the “conservatives” and the liberals fight over who can spend more money and grow the government faster.

No conservative principles we would recognize.

Well, it’s certainly preferable to how we changed their political system the last time.

That’s because they never had our American Revolution. Our country was founded on the classic (not modern) liberalism of Locke and Jefferson (individual rights, small government, etc.). That’s what American conservative try to conserve. Our Euro style conservatives were the Tories and they left after the revolution. In Europe conservatism has always been about conserving the power of the state, going back to kings and state religions. That’s why Fascism is considered “right-wing” even though it’s socialist.

The left is the same in both places.

Exactly. Socialists are Socialists the world over. Right Wing or Conservative in the Anglosphere is totally different from what that means on the continent.
