WASHINGTON (AP) The Supreme Court is allowing Ohio to clean up its voting rolls by targeting people who havent cast ballots in a while.
The justices rejected, by a 5-4 vote Monday, arguments that the practice violates a federal law intended to increase the ranks of registered voters. A handful of other states also use voters inactivity to trigger a process that could lead to their removal from the voting rolls.
Justice Samuel Alito said for the court that Ohio is complying with the 1993 National Voter Registration Act. He was joined by his four conservative colleagues.
The four liberal justices dissented.
Partisan fights over ballot access are being fought across the country. Democrats have accused Republicans of trying to suppress votes from minorities and poorer people who tend to vote for Democrats. Republicans have argued that they are trying to promote ballot integrity and prevent voter fraud.

Sotomayor is unfit to sit the bench.
My family and I do not use obituaries. People rob the houses of family members while at funerals. Besides. Who reads newspapers??
Sotomayor, ...the backdrop of substantial efforts by states to disenfranchise low-income and minority voters...
B.S. Such a lame argument! You need valid ID to obtain ANY Government Freebies! (Well, not always if you’re here ILLEGALLY!)
Honest and grifter-types NEVER seem to be ‘disenfranchised’ when it comes to that, are they?
Go one step further and consolidate the voter rolls from all 50 states. This would help to weed out people who have residences in more than one state and vote in all of them. With the current trend towards voting by mail, this multi-state fraudulent voting is now a lot simpler than ever.
She is at least partly correct: the dead are indeed low-income, with a 100% unemployment rate.
A big deal on this particular front-Thank You Lord!
Yes...of course, it’s a different era. Today’s way of doing the same thing would be to use their computer to go to the Bureau of Vital Statistics for the deaths.
A reminder that except for social issues, Anthony Kennedy is a conservative.
FYI-— Waylon Jennings was a registered voter in Las Vegas for the 2016 election.
He has been dead for a number of years.
The Unwise Latina is a racist, incompetent affirmation action jackson
Really, getting dead people off the voter rolls intimidates minorities? How, they won't jump at the pack of cigs to vote twice?
My question exactly. Leftists are fond of the entirely hypothetical worst-case scenario as a pretext to impose their agenda (Kagan has relied on little else during her time on the bench).
What is the worst case here? Having to re-register? 2 min at the DMV or at one of the tables lefties are so fond of setting up. Big deal.
January 21st, every 4 years wipe all the voting registrations clean
Boom!
I know it gets overused, but boom!
dead for 16 years and still on the roles? probably voting too...

They weren’t taking voters off the rolls just for not showing up.
“That will make it much harder for the dead to vote Democrat......”

Not to mention all the names gathered through voter registration drives that never voted in person, or absentee, yet continually cast absentee ballots, with a fake signature.
