Supreme Court allows Ohio voter purge

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is allowing Ohio to clean up its voting rolls by targeting people who haven’t cast ballots in a while.

The justices rejected, by a 5-4 vote Monday, arguments that the practice violates a federal law intended to increase the ranks of registered voters. A handful of other states also use voters’ inactivity to trigger a process that could lead to their removal from the voting rolls.

Justice Samuel Alito said for the court that Ohio is complying with the 1993 National Voter Registration Act. He was joined by his four conservative colleagues.

The four liberal justices dissented.

Partisan fights over ballot access are being fought across the country. Democrats have accused Republicans of trying to suppress votes from minorities and poorer people who tend to vote for Democrats. Republicans have argued that they are trying to promote ballot integrity and prevent voter fraud.

The Republicans are clearly discriminating against metabolically-challenged Democrats!

...and if the NeverTrumpters had prevailed, we would have lost this too. Something to think about when Krauthammer kicks over.

Photo ID would require at least a picture of the tombstone for Democrat voters.

And all re-registrations should require a right thumb-print which will be compared to previous thumb-prints for consistency as well as cross-checked to make sure felons aren’t voting in the states where they’re disallowed.

The cleaner and more secured our voter rolls are, the more confidence Americans can have that their ballots actually mean something. I don’t want to be disenfranchised by having my vote cancelled out by an illegal alien or a dead person or a felon illegally participating.

The problem with even rare voter fraud is that there is no mechanism in place to cure the crime. Votes are submitted anonymously, and even if millions of votes are fraudulently submitted, there is no way to differentiate those ballots, even if the fraudulent voters are identified and prosecuted! So the resulting election count COUNTS, even with illegitimate ballots in them.

They weren’t taking voters off the rolls just for not showing up.

Bingo! But such a claims makes such effective fodder for the lie machine.

THIS is the nothing burger that the fraudsters are complaining about:

The state said it only uses the disputed process after first comparing its voter lists with a U.S. postal service list of people who have reported a change of address. But not everyone who moves notifies the post office, the state said.

So the state asks people who haven’t voted in two years to confirm their eligibility. If they do, or if they show up to vote over the next four years, voters remain registered. If they do nothing, their names eventually fall off the list of registered voters.

“Combined with the two years of nonvoting before notice is sent, that makes a total of six years of nonvoting before removal,” Alito wrote.

She should be getting called a racist. Having such unreasonable low expectations of minorities is purely racist. These minorities will tell you they have zero problems with having ID and the means to cast a vote.

So this means that the dead must keep voting or lose their constitutional rights?

Ohio hasn’t done it any other way according to my decades long memory.

Makes sense. People move, die, change names, and have identities stolen. NOT updating the rolls is what should be illegal.

That is why all voters must be verified BEFORE the votes are cast and counted.

I agree, but there is her qualifier of ‘substantial.’

If it’s ‘substantial,’ then there must by definition be substantial evidence.

These are state governments we’re talking about. The same people who can’t fill a pothole, process a tax return, or respond to inquiries in under 6 weeks. The idea of them systematically ‘disenfranchising’ anyone is laughable for the simple reason that they are full of know-nothing rubber-stamping bureaucrats.

It’s a simultaneous example of DC ivory tower types thinking that government is all powerful and that government SHOULD be all powerful.

“You need valid ID to obtain ANY Government Freebies! (Well, not always if you’re here ILLEGALLY!)”

In California, when you apply for assistance, you need to show three documents proving you are an American Citizen, except of course when you are not an American citizen, then no documents are necessary. I am not joking, this is Reality.

Sotomayor: “the backdrop of substantial efforts by states to disenfranchise low-income and minority voters”
_______________________
Really? Where is the evidence of such “substantial efforts” any time in the last 40 years? She cites that as if it is a fact...and I am pretty certain that she is injecting pure political partisanship into her decision-making process. Yeah, I know, who would have expected her to be objective and intellectually honest?
