Personally it would not surprise me if the deal was already struck and this is just the show. That's been my take as well. I just can't picture Trump making such a high profile trip like this without the outcome already being pre-determined.
The photo below on the White House lawn last week pretty much confirmed my theory. Look how happy and relaxed they all are!

I was just going to post the same thing. IMHO everything was put in place with China, Pompeo went and told Kim what he was going to go along with, and this is all show to make it look less clandestine.
