Canadians are one in a million -- while waiting for medical treatment

Canada's single-payer healthcare system forced over 1 million patients to wait for necessary medical treatments last year. That's an all-time record.

Those long wait times were more than just a nuisance; they cost patients $1.9 billion in lost wages, according to a new report by the Fraser Institute, a Vancouver-based think-tank.

Lengthy treatment delays are the norm in Canada and other single-payer nations, which ration care to keep costs down. Yet more and more Democratic leaders are pushing for a single-payer system -- and more and more voters are clamoring for one.

Indeed, three in four Americans now support a national health plan -- and a new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll finds that health care is the most important issue for voters in the coming election.

The leading proponent of transitioning the United States to a single-payer system is Sen. Bernie Sanders, Vermont's firebrand independent. If Sanders and his allies succeed, Americans will face the same delays and low-quality care as their neighbors to the north.

By his own admission, Sen. Sanders' "Medicare for All" bill is modeled on Canada's healthcare system. On a fact-finding trip to Canada last fall, Sanders praised the country for "guaranteeing health care to all people," noting that "there is so much to be learned" from the Canadian system.

The only thing Canadian patients are "guaranteed" is a spot on a waitlist. As the Fraser report notes, in 2017, more than 173,000 patients waited for an ophthalmology procedure. Another 91,000 lined up for some form of general surgery, while more than 40,000 waited for a urology procedure.

All told, nearly 3 percent of Canada's population was waiting for some kind of medical care at the end of last year.

You aren’t supposed to notice the people who come to America for heart surgery and cancer treatment.

But Bernie won’t ever have to wait gor care, will he....Because House and Senate members have something they’ll deny their voters: choice.

Bear in mind that Canada’s entire population is just over 36 million.

By contrast, California’s population is nearly 40 million..................

This is a powerful message for Bernie Sanders.

Just saying.

It is one issue, that I believe the dems have completely right.

No other issue in the entire spectrum. But on this one issue, I am completely supportive of the dem position.

I know. I will be criticised for saying that. But I believe the issue could become critical of the GOP makes the mistake of ending up repealing healthcare reform.

This is a big issue.

Most Candadians aren’t happy with their healthcare - waiting for Doctor appointments can take months, and try rescheduling if “something comes up”.

But you can go get a checkup any time (ans as often as) you want!

So most people over-use that, and think “how wonderful” this is, while causing delays for other things.

They will start rationing soon.

You’re really really dumb if you think Government Health care will be anything but a major disaster.

Look at the VA if you want an example of government health care.

Some of the best paying jobs in Canada was an alignment with heart by pass surgery or new cancer treatments in America.

Then, getting Canadian Doctors to recommend that their rich patients fly to America for those treatments available in America.

And rightly so.

Healthcare is not a right, in fact, healthcare should be a privilege for those who are productive members of our society.

With that, we must kill Obamacare, Medicaid and Medicare.

A free market medical industry would level the playing field and provide unencumbered medical services to those who are most productive.

I don’t agree.

America’s healthcare system is EXPENSIVE AS ALL GET OUT.

Nobody else on the entire planet earth, pays anywhere near as much.

Nobody.

Anywhere.

A BIG BIG share of the blame lies at the feet of the Republican Congress should be educating the public.

The reason they don’t is because they want socialized medicine for us.

And most of the Republicans would vote for impeachment if they thought they could get away with it too.

Been elsewhere on the planet. They DO pay. In the form of confiscatory taxes if they’re makers. If they’re takers, they’re on somebody else’s nickel/Euro/pound.

And the care is often worth the patient’s out of pocket costs: IOW, not much.

I used to have a cabin about 25 miles north of North Bay, Ontario. My neighbor wasn’t feeling good so went to the hospital in NB. They said they thought it was a heart valve issue, but didn’t have the right equipment to be sure. So she went to Sudbury, about 200 miles away, to have it checked out. The were certain it was a valve issue, but it had to be verified before treatment could begin in Toronto, 350 miles away. She went for the tests and it was verified she would need a valve replacement and she was placed “on the list”. At the existing work-off rate, it would be 19 months before she would have the operation. She died two months later. Yep, nothing like “free” medical care. If their system is so great, as Hillary was trying to tell us back in the 1990’s, how come Seattle hospitals performed over 57,000 surgeries on Canadians?

Hmmm, didn't Obama claim the ACA would be cheaper?
I don't want any healthcare "system." I want a return to an open market.

Completely right?

A tiny bit right would be more believable.
