The Increasing Meaningless of Modern American Life
PJ Media ^ | 10 June 2018 | John Hawkins

“We live in an empty culture. We have fled from God, from meaning, from purpose, and the suicide epidemic is a direct result. People are wallowing in despair, believing that there is no transcendent truth or beauty to be found in life.” – Matt Walsh

“Nothing costs enough here.” – Brave New World

n America, we have separated sex from procreation. Increasingly, we’re spiritual, but not religious which means that we separate God from religion. Via social media, we separate friendship from personal contact. Marriage is no longer “til death do us part”—it’s until we get tired of it, get divorced and move on. A man without an education, but who’s willing to work hard can no longer support a family. Of course, it wouldn’t matter if he did since the government will just step in and take care of it if he doesn’t. Increasingly, work comes from large corporations where the employee is little more than a cog in someone else’s wheel.

What that means is many Americans live lives devoid of meaning. They don’t take pride in their work. They’re not very concerned with pleasing or living up to the standards God has set. Fewer and fewer of us are married and having kids, but of those who do, that marriage isn’t as permanent as it used to be. We may be constantly in contact with others online, but we see less of each other in person than ever before.

I'm not religious in the least, have never been married, have no children...and yet my life has meaning to me.

Go figure.

The lost perspective on the realities of Creation & what works in human relationships, has also been a factor in some of the school mass shootings.

Suicidal Rage vs. "Something Of Value".

And see, generally, Misdirection: Familiar Leftist Tactic, by which, the Left prevents the wake-up, which would ordinarily be expected.

Wow.

Pretty depressing.

No wonder there is an epidemic of suicides.

FWIIW my life has plenty of meaning which is imbued from the people in it. And I really have no close friends but that doesn’t matter.

Our culture has substituted seeking God’s will, with focus on our individual whims.

The poorest people are the most likely to be obese, something that has never happened before. We are the most entertained people ever. Many look at screens more than they do actual faces. It was bad enough when it was just TV and home computers, now we take our dumb screens everywhere we go. Social media doesn’t seem to be that social for many, it should be called alienation media. Especially young people.

People have become weak-minded and they are electing to become addicted to opioids and they overdose.

“WE”
I did not give you permission to include me in your we.
Instead of the imperious “WE,” change it to “Some Americans.”

Marriage is no longer “til death do us part”

Oh YES it is, ask my wife, I remind her of this all the time, til death do us part is a solemn oath and I am going to see to it that it is fulfilled.

ps, we don’t discuss divorce in our house, murder yes!, but not divorce.

I’m as conservative as they come and a Christian but the truth is people have been saying similar things throughout recorded history so I don’t think I’ll throw myself off a cliff yet.

I get that. However, the only meaning your life has is the meaning you give it. Eventually that comes up short. Ultimately there is an awakening similar to that scene in “The Jerk”, where the guys suddenly realize they are just waiting around for an oven mitt, and the driver says, “You wanna wait around for an oven mitt?” and they try to leave.

Without a relationship with our creator, so much of life is the equivalent of “waiting around for an oven mitt.” It just takes a while to realize it.

As Paul said, if there is no resurrection we might as well eat and drink for tomorrow we die.

I’m not religious in the least, however I am no atheist either, have never been married, have no children... and yet my life has meaning to me.

I live for my German Shepherds. Those are my babies.

What matters in this world is that you have love in your life, because from love springs happiness.

>>We were designed as gardeners, not cubicle rats.<<

That is quite lovely. A complete philosophy in a single statement.

I am “borrowing” it — this time WITH attribution :) A rarity indeed.

The truth is that it just takes one spouse to do that to the other. Just one spouse can say I no longer agree it’s “til death do us part.” And that, imho, is a large reason for the meaningless epidemic. So many have suffered a broken marriage or were so influenced by it that they, themselves, are reluctant to get married. Hello MGTOW?
