Lots of articles lately about suicide: some 45,000 Americans commit suicide every year, and there have been some higly-publicized suicides lately.

Class, discuss.

“Suicide’s illegal in these parts.” It’s a Wonderful Life.

Common sense about such things is being drummed out of children by the communjst schools.

“Protestant women who worshiped weekly at church were far less likely to take their own lives than were women who seldom or never attended services. But these same Protestant women were still seven times more likely to die by their own hand than were their devout Catholic sisters.”

How many of those Protestant women went to mainline denominations that elevate social justice and reject the Gospel? There are still many Protestant denominations where a woman could attend church for years and never hear:

“Jesus went to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God: “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” - Mark 1

“Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” - Acts 2

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” - Acts 16

“If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation.” - Romans 10

“For by one offering he has perfected forever those who are sanctified. The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. For after he says:

‘This is the covenant I will make with them after those days’, the Lord says, ‘I will put my laws on their hearts
and write them on their minds, and I will never again remember their sins and their lawless acts.’

Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.” - Hebrews 10

If you are going more than once a week you probably also believe you have a weekly obligation to attend Mass, even if you are not fit to receive the Host. And if so you probably would probably also believe you have an obligation to go to confession as soon as possible. So maybe it is less likely for Catholic women to stop going long enough for black suicidal depression to take hold?

I suspect the reason why this applies to Roman Catholic women more than other denominations is simple.

Catholics are taught that suicide is a mortal sin that can lead to damnation, if not repented of before death.

Devout catholic women are likely to believe this and therefore less likely to act on suicide out of fear of damnation.

Other denominations understand that there isn’t a difference between sins of any type. Any sin can separate you from God.

And more importantly, that Christ paid the penalty for all sins for those who entrust themselves to him.

My 2 cents tonight.

Among especially devout Catholic women — those in the pews more than once a week — suicides were a vanishing phenomenon.

Devout Catholic women — those in the pews more than once a week — are a vanishing phenomenon.

Church attendance [2002-2005]: Evangelicals at approx. 60 percent showed the highest percentage of those who reported they attended services weekly or almost weekly, with 30% going more than once a week. Catholics were at 45 percent (9% more than once a week), and Jews 15 percent. Gallup poll. between 2002 and 2005. http://www.christianpost.com/article/20060418/weekly-attendance-highest-among-Evangelical-churches.htm

Church attendance linked with reduced suicide risk, especially for Catholics, study says

Seems like a no-brainer to me.

How much 'grant money' was involved in this??

Obviously Jonestown is an outlier.
