Singapore (AFP) - Former US basketball star Dennis Rodman flew into Singapore late Monday ahead of at summit betwen President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un, playing down expectations of an immediate breakthrough at the historic meeting.
Rodman, who has struck up an unlikely friendship with the basketball loving North Korean leader, arrived in the city-state some nine hours before Trump meets with Kim in a bid to negotiate an end to a decades-old nuclear stand-off.
He said he expected the Trump-Kim summit to "go fairly well" but added "people should not expect too much for the first time".
"I'm just happy to be a part of it," he told reporters at Changi Airport.
"I think that I brought awareness to a lot of things around the world and I think North Korea has given a lot of people the opportunity to do this conference now and I hope it's a success.
"Who knew this would have happened five to six years ago... It's exciting to be a part of it."
Rodman, sporting a black t-shirt advertising a cryptocurrency he is involved with, said he was unsure whether he would get to meet with Kim -- a man he has previously described as a "friend for life".
"Every time I see him it's always a surprise. So maybe tomorrow it's the same thing. Maybe it's a surprise I'll see him tomorrow before he leaves," he said.
Rodman has made five trips to Pyongyang since Kim took power.

If something comes of this, Dennis Rodman will have done more for global peace over the last 8 years than Obama.
As much as I hate to give him credit, Rodman’s “diplomacy” probably played a part in preparing Kim believe a good relationship with the US is possible. I can see where liberals are coming from hoping this fails so Trump doesn’t get credit. But I’d be happy with success even if it means Rodman gets the nobel peace prize (he will have done more to deserve it than Obama).
* I don’t mean to overemphasize Rodman’s role which is minor at best. Just to point out it’s far more than Obama did.
Trump should offer to appoint Rodman as the new U.S. Ambassador to North Korea . That would cinch the deal with Kim. Give Rodman the green light to bring in his kinky girlfriends to act as staffers an interns at the U.S.E. Pyongyang . He’d have Kim dancing a jig .

Rodman did accomplish more than obama ever did.
I thought the Worm was in Singapore to have a sex change operation so he can play in the WNBA?
That’s what I say.. with Trump, all things are possible! He’s my superhero. Every time I think of him a smile comes to my face and I got to be there when he was nominated in Cleveland and vote for him to be our Party’s nominee. I am so overwhelmed with gratitude to him for just being himself.
Only fitting that at a meeting of the worlds Royal session, there need be a COURT JESTER present for a laugh.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
If this was a Democrat president who was doing this Summit, it would be HISTORIC and MONUMENTAL.
Noted all around geopolitical genius sets everyone straight.
Rodman is a “part of” nothing. That goofy clown has no business in any of this.
Oh for crying out loud, a trained monkey could do more than Obama ever did.
Rodman deserves zero credit. I wouldn’t let that clown hand out fresh towels in the mens restroom.
