Time for Europe to fill US vacuum, says ex-Danish PM [Helle Thorning-Schmidt]

“Keep calm and carry on.” In the wake of a disastrous G7 summit where US president Donald Trump all but broke off the Western alliance, the EU should stay cool and prepare to take over global leadership.

That is the message on Monday (11 June) by a former member of the EU leaders club, Helle Thorning-Schmidt.

“The US is leaving a vacuum. And who should step in? For me, it is completely obvious, it is Europe’s time to step in,” the former Danish prime minister said at an event in Brussels. “That’s where our new next opportunity is,” she said, describing Trump’s course as a “most massive wake-up call.”

Thorning-Schmidt, who was presenting a report on “What Europe can do to regain initiative”, insisted that the EU should have a “bigger engagement in the Middle East”, and recommit to the Paris climate agreement and the Iran nuclear deal.

She also argued that the EU should take “the leadership — that we would get from nowhere else — in regulating the information society.” …

Europe has as much peace as it still does because the USA dared to be the 2 ton gorilla of the world.

I foresee rightist European parties (which would correspond mostly to our center-left) coming to the fore.

taking care of itself

Except that defense thing. We took on the defense of Europe so that Germany would not build another high class military. Consider where Merkel is now and Germany's econoomic dominance in Europe. Germany being Germany, How does one think Germany would be acting right now had Germany the sort of military of which it is capable?

Europe can start by paying its own way for the defense of Europe.

Only if that means paying for American Defense of Europe.Germany has a history and a certain national and cultural character.

Yes, you must regulate information, just like a good Danish Nazi. It’s way past time to cut Europe loose. Let them start paying their fair share. We have funded their socialistic ways long enough.

Germany has the spine and themoney which is why we continue to pre-empt German defense. If we provide the military for defense of Europe(read: Germany) then Germany does not develop a military capable of overrunning the rest of Europe and we don’t have to use our military to pull France and England’s cookies out of the fire yet again.

Female and/or childless PMs are going to run Europe into the ground. Being childless would tend to warp one’s desires for the future.

The entire concept of a European Union has been a contrived fake from day one. It has always been a bunch of jealous turds who decided that since they could never be equal to America they would mere declare themselves equal to America. It doesn’t work like that as they are now finding out.

Maybe the Euro-trash dodos have a point though. Maybe Trump should withdraw the US altogether from their delusional, suicidal little confab and establish a new economic alliance of the USA, Russia, China, India, and other vibrant nations—notably to include Korea.

Europe’s been trying to commit suicide for centuries. Maybe it’s time to let ‘em just go. America has paid a heavy, heavy price to save them from their past attempts.

Germany’s not capable of it anymore. I lived there twice. They lack a spine. Utterly. They wouldn’t even be able or willing to defend themselves let alone threaten anybody else. There aren’t enough intact functioning men in that country to man a single panzer division of old.

No, they really don’t have the spine. They’re complete jellyfish today. They don’t have very many young people either.
