Curiously, the establishment was going to allow for him to be anointed in the general election (Coons was supposed to be the sacrificial lamb). But it came with a cost. Castle was going to resign at some point early on and allow for Plugs Junior (then the state AG) to take the seat. Castle had no loyalty either to the GOP or to their base voters. One merely need look at the 1992 elections to see that he and Tom Carper merely agreed privately to swap offices.
