Sanford defeated in primary defined by support for Trump

Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) appears to have lost his Tuesday primary, which became a referendum on his criticism of President Trump.

State Rep. Katie Arrington, who hammered Sanford as a traitor to President Trump, is projected to win the GOP primary in a victory that may spell the end of Sanford’s long political career in the state.

The Associated Press called the race at 12:09 a.m., with Arrington leading Sanford by 51-47 percent margin with 99 percent of precincts reporting. Sanford becomes the second incumbent to lose a reelection primary bid this cycle.

Sanford had never lost an election until Tuesday, even after he was caught having an affair in 2009 while governor in a revelation that also threatened his political career. But his willingness to criticize Trump, who is lionized by the GOP primary electorate, proved politically fatal.

The congressman may not have had a difficult primary fight but for his repeated criticisms of Trump both during the election and since the president took office. In 2017, he told Politico that Trump “has fanned the flames of intolerance” and has been one of the few GOP lawmakers to demand Trump release his tax returns.

That criticism became the centerpiece of Arrington’s campaign—she blasted Sanford as a “Never Trumper” on the stump and in campaign ads, arguing that the district would be best served by a Trump ally instead of an antagonist. She also savaged him for his affair, airing an innuendo-laden television ad that told Sanford to “take a hike,” a reference to his initial cover story that he had been hiking the Appalachian Trail when he had really caught a flight to Argentina to see his mistress.

That strategy won Arrington a last minute endorsement of Trump...

They just can't help themselves!

Sanford defeated in primary defined by support for Trump

The headline is deliberately worded so that the unknowing reader will believe that Sanford was defeated due to support - not opposition - to President Trump. Never mind that the author (as opposed to the headline writer) confessed the truth in the opening paragraph!

Is Addington going to win the district, or is it a swing district?

Thank goodness. Sanford is a vile RINO. He’s right up there with Jeff Flake on the sleaze meter.

Keep in mind that Sanford beat Steven Colbert’s little sister for this seat. That is the ONLY reason I voted for him. (I live in his district).

Opening his mouth about Trump, did him in. People have long memories when it comes to bashing something that the voters stand by.

Oh yeah I just dreamed it up. I don’t post what I can’t back up but that’s not to say I’m never mistaken....it does happen but I posted that she bashed Trump in POTUS primary because I’d already sourced it

Her views on Trump evolved apparently ....she saw his popularity in her state correctly

https://www.postandcourier.com/politics/katie-arrington-calls-mark-sanford-a-nevertrumper-but-she-was/article_714abc80-4ccb-11e8-bd2e-53955848b082.html

“during the race, it drew attention that Arrington, who made her pro-Trump views the centerpiece of her campaign, appeared to have been critical of Trump in 2016.[6] In a March 2016 Facebook post, she praised Mitt Romney on the night that he delivered a rebuke of then-candidate Donald Trump, whom Romney called “a phony, a fraud” and someone who was “playing the American public for suckers”.[7] Arrington also supported Marco Rubio in the 2016 Republican primary for the presidential nomination.[6]”

“Arrington didn’t initially support Trump’s candidacy either. In a March 2016 Facebook post, she praised Mitt Romney on the night that he delivered a scathing rebuke of Trump, whom Romney called “a phony, a fraud” and someone who was “playing the members of the American public for suckers.”

“LOVE MITT ROMNEY!!!!!” Arrington wrote that night. When challenged by someone about the posting, Arrington doubled-down, writing that she “really has a problem with the moral and ethical issue of someone being president who has done nothing more than ... make fun of people.”

Sanford on the other hand has always been anti Trump which is what killed his career in South Carolina in 2018

Arrinngton apparently knew her constituents better than Sanford

The Freedom Caucus was most interested in stopping McCarthy (who’s worse than Ryan), and they floated at least two other candidates. When those candidates failed to get enough support, they went to Ryan as a compromise, again, to stop McCarthy. From those two, I’ll take Ryan every time.

Dimitri Cherny = huge fail.

I’m sure most from SC know what was going on, but I was curious so went searching and here’s what he was doing:

He touts himself as being just like Bernie Sanders ... even has a Bernia tattoo ... but decided to run in the Republican primary - whereas, I don’t think Bernie would have tried that.

“If you want me to remove Mark Sanford, and keep the Trumpublican Katie Arrington out of office, YOU are now my distribution network.

If you want your favored Democratic Congressional candidate to have any chance of winning in November, it will only happen if I am the Republican candidate running against them.

...We can do this. Go to your polling place Tuesday - open 7am to 7pm - ask for the Republican ballot, and vote for CHERNY for Congress.”
