He apparently just got tired of the Air Force and wanted to do something else. Why didn’t he just ask for a discharge?

I think the guy had some type of mental breakdown. He’s in a field where you really can’t go asking for help or your clearance goes down the drain. So he made the decision to just walk away. Like you....I think after twelve months at this base (after returning from overseas)...he could have just handed the paperwork over and gotten discharged. Through the 80s and 90s, I probably observed five or six officers who were burnt-out and ended up getting out of the service.
