Note to self.... if i am ever under house arrest for foreign dealings, don’t call people over seas and ask them to testify for me. Let my lawyer do that.

I'm mostly a civil litigator these days, but back when I did white-collar criminal defense, the first piece of advice given to any client was not to talk to anyone about the case. If you want to find out what a witness is going to say, the defendant's lawyer asks the witness's lawyer. Direct communication between a defendant and a witness is asking for trouble.
