HARRISBURG Republicans in the Pennsylvania Senate on Tuesday moved to capitalize on the political momentum behind adopting a less partisan redistricting system to overhaul how state appeals judges are elected, drawing howls of protest from Democrats.
The GOP majority muscled provisions into a redistricting bill so that appeals court judges would be elected by district, rather than statewide. The measure would address long-standing Republican complaints that candidates from the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh regions win a disproportionate share of statewide judicial races, compared to candidates from the rest of the state.
The vote was 31-18, with every Democrat and two Republicans voting no. Supreme, Superior and Commonwealth court judges would be phased out as their current terms expire, and the courts would gradually be filled by those elected from districts.
If voters approve the bill's citizens' commission, the commission will draw the lines for legislative and congressional districts.
The move comes amid Republican backlash over Pennsylvania's Democratic-majority Supreme Court overturning the state's GOP-drawn map of congressional districts earlier this year.

Good news from PA! I hope it passes.
The Framers would freak out at judicially-drawn districts.
Of course, you can count on Gov. Wolf to veto it. But it makes sense, geographical diversity and all. The left woships diversity as long as there is no diversity of opinion to deviate from the party line.
The GOP proposal looked just as clean or cleaner than the court mandated proposal, but they rejected it without comment. One reason is because Westmoreland County (who supplied all the margin and then some for Trump to win Pennsylvania's 20 electoral votes) wasn't divided under the GOP proposal.
When we vote for appellate court judges I look at the county behind each name and ONLY vote for candidates from other than Philadelphia or Allegheny Co.
Great news. Judges think they are above the law, they fought the law and the law won.
As a PA resident who got messed over in the redistricting of PA-30 Congressional district, I’m following this with interest.
Great news...
I vote for as many Conservatives as I can.
Heh.
You must let me know if you find one from Philadelphia or Allegheny County. LOL.
howls of protest from Democrats.
I was thinking of nailing one of their feet to the floor
and putting the hammer just out of reach...
