Trump heard conservative criticism of the proposal on TV, according to senior Republicans, and swatted the proposal down.
Im looking at both of them, Trump told Fox & Friends in an interview Friday morning from the White House lawn. I certainly wouldnt sign the more moderate one. Hours later, the president added to the confusion with a tweet that demanded provisions that the compromise bill seemingly includes.
Any Immigration Bill MUST HAVE full funding for the Wall, end Catch & Release, Visa Lottery and Chain, and go to Merit Based Immigration.
Go for it! he wrote. The upshot, at least as of Friday afternoon, was that the president dealt a potentially fatal blow to the bill.
Breitbart reported yesterday that the compromise didnt address the presidents four pillars, and made no mention of the border wall; Politico reports that the bill funds the wall, but with concessions on President Trumps four pillars. Those pillars are:
a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients, an end to the diversity visa lottery program, curbs on family migration and $25 billion for the border wall.
The president has indicated a willingness to compromise on DACA, but must have ironclad guarantees on border security that moderate Republicans have not delivered. We warned yesterday that this would be dead on arrival, and the president confirmed that in todays interview.
