Harvard was the same way to Jews until the late 60’s or 70’s.

I think the attitude is that Harvard confers so much governoring power on their graduates that Harvard would prefer people from families that have been in the USA a couple of generations so they knew something about the people and country they governed.

That would be giving them too much credit for patriotism.
