An elementary school set to open in Mountain View, Calif., next summer will be named after an illegal immigrant. The new school will be named after award-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas, after the Mountain View Whisman School District board voted on Thursday.
Vargas emigrated from the Philippines with his family to America when he was 12 years old.
Vargas said, As a proud product of the Bay Areas public school system, I am overwhelmed by this totally unexpected and deeply meaningful honor."
Vargas revealed his undocumented status in 2011, in a New York Times Magazine essay.
"On the surface, Ive created a good life. Ive lived the American Dream. ... But I am still an undocumented immigrant. And that means living a different kind of reality," Vargas wrote.
The decision to name the yet-to-be opened school after Vargas comes amid growing backlash against immigration practices and policies by the Trump administration.
Mountain View Whisman School District board President Laura Blakely said that the decision was also motivated by recent immigration news. We wanted to pick someone who embodied the values of what you can do with an education, as Jose does," she said.

Undoubtedly this.... renowned... individual will be commemorated on the Google Home page as well
I have a very good friend with a Phd that lives in Mountain View. He is a solid as a rock conservative. He would make a good candidate.
Wetback Middle School
“Wetback Middle School”
It quite a long swim from the Philippines
“you can do with an education”
Like be an agitator for lawless invasion and takeover?
Why does Blakely think we should respect her position of authority when it too is based only on law? Under color of what authority does she take and spend other people’s money?
This is simply the leftist in CA saying eff you to Trump and tens of millions of his supporters.
“...amid growing backlash against immigration practices and policies by the Trump administration. ...”
The backlash is coming from the people that did not vote for Trump. The majority of American citizens support his policies and would like to see all illegals immediately deported.
Well you have to remember the state that is doing it something they call normal.
My son’s girlfriend in Peru visited the US on a tourist visa. She worked here and paid her taxes. She then applied to school in the states but her student visa was denied because she had worked on a tourist visa. Hard working, smart kid...but she was honest about declaring her income and paying her taxes...now she pays the price and cannot come here for college.
Contrast to this slimeball who should be deported.
