China's Next War: China and Vietnam look to be on the verge of war

Despite being two of the world’s three remaining communist states, China and Vietnam look to be on the verge of war. Vietnam is an obstacle to China’s ambitions for East Asian hegemony.

One of truisms from popular culture is that one should never get involved in a land war in Asia.  The mistake of getting involved in a land war in Asia is hard to avoid if one of your neighbouring countries is set upon attacking you, which is Vietnam’s fate. If China is going to attack Vietnam, there would be satellite evidence of Chinese preparations, and so there is. Following is a satellite photo of 36 acres of new, red-roofed buildings at army base in China 10 km north of the border at 24° 24’ 40’’ N, 106° 42’ 26’’:

It is across the road from an existing army base, which can be identified as a military base by the running track. Most large Chinese military bases have a running track. One thing that is different about these new buildings is that they have red roofs in a region that is mostly blue roofs, suggesting the materials ordering decision was made far to the north in Beijing.  Another thing different about these buildings is that they are hard to access with small gaps between them. Which suggests they are for storage for things that won’t be accessed often, such as archives, or accessed only once – for hiding tanks, artillery, armored personnel carriers prior to an attack into Vietnam.

The last time China invaded Vietnam was from the predawn hours of February 17 to March 16, 1979. In line with the flexibility of Chinese strategic theory, this was called a “Self-Defensive Counterattack Against Vietnam

They were pissed at Vietnam for invading Cambodia and taking out their ally, Pol Pot.

The Philippines could retake that man-made island. VietNam will not take back it’s U.S. deportees. Time for the negotiator. Anti-tank systems would be quite effective.

3 communist states? Who’s doing the counting here?

There are at least 4:
China. Vietnam. Cuba. North Korea.

And Venezuela at this point also qualifies.

Despite being two of the world’s three remaining communist states, China and Vietnam....

So obviously either North Korea or Cuba isn't considered communist. I wonder which one. I'm guessing the media doesn't consider Cuba to be communist since Bambi's overtures.

Huh? Did you mean to respond to me, or another FReeper? Your response does not seem to be in the context of my comment.

Vietnam has resisted China’s advances for hundreds maybe thousands of years. We American’s should know all too well of the warrior spirit of the Vietnamese.

This will be an ironic reversal the the 1960’s. Instead of the Chinese supporting the Vietnamese against the Americans it will be the American’s supporting the Vietnamese against Chinese aggression. All the other Asian countries concerned about Chinese aggression will likewise provide material support. The world may witness China as a paper tiger...

My wife goes to a Vietnamese nail salon on a regular basis and is friends with the owner. Apparently he is from Saigon (Ho Chi Min City) and complains about the Chinese influence in Vietnam all the time. He has told her that some of his relatives have disappeared because of their opposition to the Chinese. No way of knowing how true this is, but it definitely sounds like there is unhappiness with the Chinese over there.

China would obliterate Vietnam today. No comparison with what happened in 1979.

This will be an excuse to drag the US in... again. By then, China will have Russia on it’s side and we’ll be stuck out in the cold. I’ve been saying for years we need to make nice with Russia but the demonrats are all over this Russia, Russia, Russia thing and playing into China’s hand. They’re determined to finish Soetoro’s game to end the US.

China needs to push south to the Oil of Indonesia and Malaya -They can not let Vietnam win again. It will be like Genis Khan. Lots will die. US is too far away to give real help. The Chinese Navy and Nukes to threaten the USA will keep our forces out of the fray. Only Japan and India might stop the Red Horde. I believe the Chinese will move on Taiwan first, a blood less take over. Then, land, sea, air and cyber attack after an “incident” Six months will see Vietnam fall. Lots more coming to the USA from Vietnam. Then, will come a move further south. Places threatened: Singapore and oil rich states. China built that navy and they will use it.

I would think that a direct threat to Singapore would bring a US response.

THAT is quite a daisy chain of conclusions based on almost nothing tangible.
