If China ever goes to war with Vietnam ( God forbid), the Viets do not stand a chance.
Unlike fighting us , China does not play politically correct games when fighting a war. They will simply use missiles, bombs and endless supply of men to overwhelm the Viets.
There is also one important difference — China won’t tolerate the Jane Fonda’s in their midst and anybody who speaks out will “disappear”.
There are no Walter Cronkite or opposing press to speak of any so called “brutalities”.
I don’t recall Europeans or entertainers or college students protesting that war.
Possibly not. The one thing the Chinese could not tolerate is the possibility of losing. If they go in, they better have overwhelming victory all the time. And the days of a Chinese soldier fighting on 3 balls of rice are over. If you send in 25 divisions, you better be able to supply 25 divisions.
The Chinese navy runs the risk of encountering one of the 6 Vn Kilo subs and that could hurt the Dragon.
It's a question of "face". China cannot afford to look like they cannot defeat Vietnam, because that would nullify China's ability to intimidate their neighbors. They would rather conduct genocide than appear weak and ineffective.
Vietnam has resisted China’s advances for hundreds maybe thousands of years. We American’s should know all too well of the warrior spirit of the Vietnamese.
This will be an ironic reversal the the 1960’s. Instead of the Chinese supporting the Vietnamese against the Americans it will be the American’s supporting the Vietnamese against Chinese aggression. All the other Asian countries concerned about Chinese aggression will likewise provide material support. The world may witness China as a paper tiger...
Then Việt Nam cannot use the sea lanes without China's permission and limits on trade and contact with other countries. Okinawa comes to be a point of contention for the next grab.
China may also attack Việt Nam to test Ông Sam-USA. If we allow it to happen without striking back very quickly, China will move to hegemonize the lands bordering he water of the Biển Đông.
If it is going to happen I find myself hoping it will be during the time I am next in country. That does not seem rational, I suppose, but it's pretty strong. Next trip will be on a long visa.
