Sesame Street reaches out to 2.7 million American children with an incarcerated parent

Last week, Sesame Street added a new character, to whom more than 2.7 million American children can now relate. The show introduced Alex, a child whose father is in prison, in a video included in the online interactive, “Little Children, Big Challenges: Incarceration.”

The “Little Children, Big Challenges” feature aims to reach children facing complex challenges, including bullying, sibling rivalry and parental incarceration.

The site’s latest topic highlights a trend identified in a 2010 report from The Pew Charitable Trusts which found a sharp increase in the nation’s jail and prison population over the last few decades. At the time of the report, there were 2.3 million people in jail or prison compared to just 500,000 in 1980. The report noted that these figures represented the highest incarceration rate in the world.

The report found that 1.2 million inmates—more than half of the incarcerated population—were parents of children under age 18. Two-thirds of these incarcerated parents were serving time for a non-violent crime while one-third were serving time for a violent one.

As a result, there are 2.7 million minor children who have a parent in jail or prison. In other words, 1-in-28 American children (3.6%) have an incarcerated parent. Just 25 years ago, the number was 1-in-125.

A report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics found that the number of parents held in state and federal prisons increased by 79% between 1991 and midyear 2007. And half of the mothers (52%) and fathers (54%) in state prison reported that they were the primary provider for their children before their incarceration.

The Sesame Street website provides tips for caregivers to help the growing number of children affected by incarceration and features videos of both real-world children and Sesame Street characters sharing their own experiences with the subject.

Old article but thought it might be useful in context of the immigration debate and the separation of parents.

I support the local county lockup/jail (IT Dept) and in the lobby there’s a Sesame Street booklet that comforts kids whose parents are locked up. Been around for quite a while.

I think it would be great if they introduced incarcerated Muppet.

Funny how Sesame Street doesn’t talk about all the sexual deviants in their founders and talent, reaching out to children.

What I find interesting is that in the U.S.A. millions of children are separated from their parents for all kinds of reasons. Parent/s go to jail, child endangerment, unfit parent, drug addiction, sexual abuse, physical abuse, etc. But the liberals don’t care about them because it doesn’t fit in their narrative. I find it so hypocritical.

Earlier this year Larry Elder and others on Salem’s talk radio network were promoting a camp/ranch where kids who had incarcerated parents (sounded like one, not both) could go and be a kid for a week (or whatever period) and they all had that hanging over their family names so it wasn’t an issue there.

It may have been a Christian charity, I don’t know. They were talking up the charity well before this media orchestrated outrage.

Maybe next week they can tackle the subject of prison rape in great detail, then all the kids can go to a homosexual pride parade.

When my relative went to prison for drugs, she had 3 small kids. Surprise! she was not able to take her kids to jail with her.

Whole Disney net work trying to indoctrinate our kids toward homosexuality and other perversions.

Round up of all the articles I can find on illegal kids, etc. Please cross post so it’s easy for all to find in 1 spot. Clinton-Obama, LSM trying to blame all this on President Trump when it began with Clinton. HYPOCRITES.

Sesame simply normalizes ghetto values and behavior.

I have young kids. I sat with them and watched an episode of SS.

They had a vignette about going to the beach. It was a black family, and to my surprise the parents were covered in nasty ghetto tats, akin to the type you get in jail/prison.

At first I thought “is that the best they could do?”, and then I realized it was all by design: destroy the old, white values, and bring in the urban, nonwhite values.

It has been like this for at least 25 years.

I haven’t watched any episodes since I was a little kid. My mom used to put it on and watch it with me. She learned a lot of her English that way. I suppose it served an educational purpose long ago. The most my kids know about Sesame Street is through memes and a few clips I showed them. I got a kick out of those aliens that would visit Bert and Ernie, so they know about those ;)
