McALLEN, Texas (AP) — A civil rights group attorney says federal prosecutors unexpectedly dropped misdemeanor charges against 17 adult immigrants who crossed the border with children. Efren Olivares, a lawyer with the Texas Civil Rights Project, said outside of the federal courthouse in McAllen, Texas, that the 17 immigrants were supposed to have been sentenced Thursday morning for improperly entering the U.S.

You are on US soil - did you come here through the LEGAL channels, or did you cross illegally?

Why in the world would charges be dropped? Unless, of course - they are voluntarily deporting themselves....

Dropping the charges does not in any way change the fact they are illegally in the country. It may delay their removal but not stop it.

Why in the world does keeping families together lead to dropping charges? Those shouldn’t be interconnected at all. Sure, keep them together, but maintain the charges. This is nuts. Does this mean they are home free now?

first time criminal entry is a misdemeanor. The second time in ten years they are caught it is a felony. That was the law 40 years ago.
I had a cousin who lived in Canada that was stopped at a border crossing for entering the united state. he was Canadian citizen and got stopped at the crossing because he told the crossing agent he had a job interview.
Border control would not let him in because he had no green card and according to the he legally was not allowed to even apply for the job.
The job was with one of the big 3 news organization at the time. it would of been his break into network tv news broadcasting. he decided to sneak across and was caught.
My cousin was held for a day because they thought that he was part of a Iranian hit squad after the President.
My family lived in Montana about 200 miles from where my cousin was being held.My dad had a high level security clearance from his old job so the border patrol had my dad go to the border to positively Id my cousin.

Good thing for your cousin that it was a misdemeanor. I’m truly amazed, though, that initial illegal entry is only a misdemeanor.
