“Austin is the Berkeley of the South and needs to be walled off.”

The State of Texas would not survive without Austin’s tax base.

Are you kidding? As long as the oil holds out in the Permian Basin, Texas can meet its bills. West Texas (ranching and the oil patch) should become a state, North Texas (D/FW) another, Houston another, and South Texas (the Valley) can decide if they want to become independent or become part of Mexico. That would leave the weirdos in Austin on their own island to smoke weed and go broke.

Austin’s “tax base,” such as it is, consists mainly of real estate owned by the State of Texas, and which is consequently off the tax rolls, yield zero tax revenue. In other words, Austin’s “tax base” is negligible. But the exaggerated sense of self-importance of Austinites, of course, is legendary.
