A case for open borders and how it can boost the world economy
The Hill ^ | 06/23/18 | David S. D’Amato

Posted on 06/23/2018 8:07:38 AM PDT by yesthatjallen

In 2015, in the lead up to the 2016 presidential election, Bernie Sanders infamously insisted that open borders is “a Koch Brothers proposal,” and free immigration is a “right-wing proposal, which essentially says that there is no United States.” Vox’s Ezra Klein, Bernie’s interviewer, quite correctly observed that open borders would “make the global poor richer.”

As philosopher Jason Brennan writes in “Libertarianism: What Everyone Needs to Know,” “When economists estimate the welfare losses from immigration restrictions, they tend to conclude that eliminating immigration restrictions would double world GDP.” Sanders’ assertions of concern for the global poor ring awfully hollow given his unfortunate views on immigration.

Yet those views make sense if we consider his zero-sum idea of wealth-creation — the notion that one person getting richer necessarily means another getting poorer. This is an idea that economists disavowed centuries ago. In fact, contrary to Sanders’ bizarre, folk-economics, free trade and the free movement of people have made the entire world richer by orders of magnitude, the globe transformed by a positive-sum outpouring of wealth that was previously unimaginable.

SNIP

We don’t need the nation-state or its borders to have law and order. In fact, the fullest expressions of law and order are impossible while these remain in existence. National borders make the world poorer and more dangerous and lead to the kind of inhumanity taking place at the United States-Mexico border as we speak.

The people of the world should, wherever possible, ignore these borders, for their own benefit and that of the global economy. If doing so should have the effect of undermining the nation-state, then call that an added bonus.

Letting in a bunch of “Takers” will boost nothing, but the takers, themselves.

What a pant load of crap thinking. Open borders means everyone flicks to the places that are better than where they are, and then turn them into the sh*tholes they came from because they don’t want to adopt the local culture.

And here it was just this week that Pew Research concluded that Americans had a hard time distinguishing opinion from fact.

How many of the world's "poor" suffer because they live under despotic dictators and no amount of foreign aid is going to get to them (even food) and no amount of exodus is going to cause that despotism to crumble.

Open borders make the poor richer when the horde floods the US at the taxpayers expense.

Open borders are in the recipe for leftists to dominate our elections, neuter our Constitution, and install Marxist government. . . .

Boy . . . that would be really great for our economy and our well-being. / sarc

Taking from some and giving it others as socialist politicians sees fit does NOT double world GDP.

It just makes everyone poorer.

Perhaps this author should look at ancient world history when the concept of nation-state either did not exist or was still malleable. There were wholesale slaughters then when disparate groups clashed during mass migrations. It was hardly the win-win situation he posits.

Sure, maybe for the “world economy,” but it will be a disaster for all first world nations. Open borders means essentially that all the countries of the world will even out. Yes, we will help bring third world countries up to second world status, but we will also be dropping like a rock into second world status ourselves. Why don’t we ask how many Americans want the U.S. to be just like Mexico or Brazil or India?

The regular folks, especially the already struggling working class, would be devastated by this rapid influx of millions of cheap laborers across the border. The schools would be overflowing, the infrastructure crumbling, the environment would be overwhelmed, the local culture and sense of community would be heavily diluted, living costs would go through the roof, wages would drop like a stone.

Only the elites would benefit from this. The business elites would have more dirt cheap labor than they could ever hope to use, while the political elites would have a captive, easy to dominate pool of voters desperate to remain in the country at all costs.

Only an over-educated IDIOT would believe such a thing - Nations have LAWS ….

This guy is crazier than a bed bug trapped in a jar full of moonshine.

Open border enthusiasts are all suffering under the same delusion, namely that history stopped in 1945. That somehow culture doesn’t matter anymore. That everyone will now be an enlightened neo liberal secular democrat.

This fallacy is already being highlighted in Europe.

Increasing OVERALL GDP doesn’t increase percapita GDP. IN fact it probably lowers it sustainability based on the last 3 decades on empirical evidence.

So, David how does the simple act of crossing a border help the world economy?
Suppose everyone crossed the border in the opposite direction you dream of...What then?
A border was still crossed.

Reads like satire but at least it is a reasoned argument rather than the usual “you’re a racist if you don’t agree” screed.
