Disney Disaster: ‘Star Wars’ Spinoffs On Hold
Breitbart ^ | 21 June 2018 | John Nolte

Posted on 06/23/2018 6:59:28 PM PDT by Rummyfan

Until the breathtaking box office failure of Solo, Disney was brimming with plans to fill out the Star Wars universe with standalone stories like Rogue One and Solo. In fact, movies about Obi-Wan Kenobi and the bounty hunter Boba Fett were already in active development. The plan now, according to Collider, is for Lucasfilm to retreat from these standalones to “focus their attention on Star Wars: Episode IX and what the next trilogy of Star Wars films will be after that film.”

While it will be nearly impossible to articulate just what a disaster this is for Disney, let me try…

You have to keep in mind that Disney paid $4.06 billion — with a “b” — to buy the rights to Stars Wars from George Lucas. And thus far, Disney has made nowhere near their money back.

According to Deadline, 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, was a money printing machine that generated an incredible $780 million in net profit. The Last Jedi generated $418 million in net profit. Rogue One brought in $319 million. That is roughly 1.5 billion in net profit. Let’s be generous and add another $1 billion in net profit for toys and home video. We are now up to $2.5 billion. From here, we have to subtract at least a $250 million loss for Solo. The bottom line…

Disney is not only still deep in a financial hole, Disney has a damaged brand on its greedy hands.

How damaged?

Let me offer you the best analogy I can come up with.

Because of a whole series of unforced errors made by executive producer Kathleen Kennedy (that I will address in a bit), Disney has been forced to retreat all the way back to the trilogies...

Han Solo got killed off in the latest film, whatever it’s called. So why should I go see an origin story on him? The guy’s dead.

Guardians of the galaxy ended the Star Wars product.

Please explain why.

I don’t see what one has to do with the other.

Part of the problem might be the ick factor of a buddy film between a guy and a hairy ape.

The Guardians movie used music and a timeline which was the exact popular music at the time star wars was released in 1976. The soundtrack selections pull in the 45 to 60 age demographic big time. The story and effects pull in the 14 to 35 year old demographic. Brilliant casting and brilliant character development.

Anything Star Wars is stale as a popcorn fart. It's over. Done.

the Red Hen owner said. “We just felt there are moments in time when people need to live their convictions. This appeared to be one.”

Okay, you identify some good hooks in the Guardian’s movies.

I just don’t see where there is not ample room in the market place for more than one SiFi franchise.

If I thought that both Marvel and Star Wars movies were worth my dollars I would have no problem seeing both. (If I had the time)

It’s a split the baby thing. Yes I agree there is room for both, but the uncomplicated individualism, free spirited, self reliant nature of the Guardians characters tapped into exactly the appeal of the 1976 cast and story without plagiarizing. The sound track serves as the hooks. Yes.

Pretty much nailed it.
The last trilogy Lucas did, was a showcase on how to ruin a franchise. Jar-jar was not funny, charming nor interesting. He was annoying. And whatever Character Development skills Lucas had, are long gone. We knew that there were things Luke would do; and things he would never do. Same thing with Han and Leila. We knew their character

The last efforts by Lucas had zero character development. The last effort by Disney was a blastphemy of every Sraw Wars movie made.

Lucas gave Star Wars franchise cancer. Disney gave it AIDS

They problem Disney has at Lucas is the same problem they had at Marvel Comics... they let SJW editors and writers destroy their product and attack their customers.

They finally realized their mistake at Marvel, but still don’t seem willing to accept the problem at Lucas... they think saturation and non mainline story are why solo underperformed...

They seem unwilling to accept a good portion of the fan base decided it had enough after The Last Jedi...

Instead of righting the ship now, it looks like it’s going to take the next mainline film underperforming for them to accept reality.

Solo didn’t fail because it was bad, it was nothing stellar but a reasonable movie... it failed because the a large chunk of that fan base who didn’t like The Last Jedi and were basically told eff you by Kathleen Kennedy and various minions she is the boss of, basically said, fine, eff you too.

Disney has a damaged brand on its greedy hands.

Rephrase that to be more accurate: "Disney has damaged the brand with its greedy hands."

And thus far, Disney has made nowhere near their money back.

They cite boxoffice results to justify this statement. And yeah, way off. But if you put the licensed content like comics, toys, etc in how much closer does it get, I wonder?

The Last Jedi was the franchise killler. A movie that completely sucked the spirit out of the franchise and spit it into oblivion. Solo is the unfortunate collateral damage to how anti Star Wars The Last Jedi was. Star Wars may recover but who knows for sure. All I know is that The Last Jedi has pissed off a huge lot of the fan base to an extent far beyond the disappointment The Phantom Menace generated. Just go on You Tube and there are numerous hour long rants by fans on how awful The Last Jedi was. That requires an anger and commitment way beyond the normal.
