Religious sects, gangs, tribes, clans and militias are a bunch of peas in the same pod of violence that has engaged Lebanon fairly constantly for the last 40+ years.
Actually, since the beginning of the Muslim conquests, seldon has the Levant (the eastern shore of the Mediterranean from the Turkish border down to Palestine) been internally at peace, all on its its own, with peace usually imposed by one of the strong neighbors playing a role of occupier or siding with one group in dominance over the rest.
