I do believe that this young man wants to join the rest of the world. And maybe even needs to be honestly praised and looked up to. Not the mandated, forced kowtowing.

I’d bet in the private meeting with Trump and Kim, Trump gave Kim 2 options
1) Become very good friends TODAY
2) Leave the meeting and they tell the world the 2 aren’t ready to move forward yet but their people will continue to negotiate.
“Good friends” means very quick actions and complete, verifiable denuclearization in reasonable time (quick). Kim had a way out while still saving face (option 2 was critical for Trump to know Kim meant it if he took option 1). If Kim wasn’t ready for denuclearization, or didn’t have control of his military at the time, he could take option 2 and still come out looking good to his people.
Trump also let him know that agreeing to option 1 and stabbing Trump in the back would be the end for Kim. It didn’t matter if Kim was lying at the meeting or didn’t have control to make it happen. There was no threat forcing which option Kim needed to make then. But there was a huge threat about screwing the US.
Trump said before the meeting that he’d be able to come out of the face-to-face meeting being sure if he could trust Kim. These options are how that could happen. And if that’s how it happened, Kim needs to keep moving - there’s no turning back and he may as well MNKGA quick.
I suspect that you’re quite right. I also suspect that L’il Kim really does want this. Dennis Rodman seemed to confirm that suspicion when he said that Kim wanted him to take that message back to 0blowhard.
Of course Jugears shined Rodman on which is OK because he couldn’t have handled any of this anyway.
He is also aware of American politics. He has a friend in Trump for 6.5 years, but then what? Even the same party may not matter. GHWB followed RR and destroyed some of his accomplishments. (Why did we not correlate that to GWB?)
