1 dead, 12 injured after explosion, partial building collapse at Texas hospital

One person died and a dozen others were injured after what's being described as a construction accident at a hospital in Gatesville, just north of Fort Hood, Tuesday afternoon.

An explosion occurred at a construction site at Coryell Memorial Hospital around 2:15 p.m., hospital officials said.

The person who died and the twelve people injured were construction workers, officials said. Seven of them are in critical condition.

The construction crew was working on a hospital expansion project at the time, the hospital's CEO David Byrom said.

No hospitals staff or patients were injured in the blast, hospital officials said. Crews evacuated all patients.

Officials are still investigating what caused the explosion. Byrom suggested it may have been related to a gas line.

"It could be some time before we understand what occurred there. ... It was quite a blast," Byrom said.

The under-construction area where the explosion occurred is "extremely damaged," and other parts of the hospital have some damage "that appear related to a shockwave when the blast occurred," he said.

No, I don’t live in Texas anymore. Just making a comment. Really, there is absolutely no excuse for accidents like this on a construction site, none.

This happened about 25 years ago in Milwaukee at a construction site for a hospital/clinic. There was a roof collapse and I believe 3 people died.

Do they weld during construction? You have acetylene and oxygen and a tiny crack in a line and you could have quite a large explosion.

No it’s not. Worked construction most of my life. In this day and age there is no excuse but pure negligence for this kind of accident.

Every accident is caused by human failure unless it is a natural cause, earthquake, lightning etc.

Yup, Spent 50 years from Laborer to Project Engineer Manager
and sorry to say that every major screw up was worker caused ie: Cut gas line; pulled wrong support; no follow up; lack of proper supervision; etc.
RIP fellow construction guys!

I was the Network Administrator there for 10 years, ending in 2006. CMH bucked trends of small, rural hospitals closing their doors with steady growth and expansion.

Saw where they may be closed for a month or more. If liability case gets hung up in court for a long period this could be the beginning of the end.

So all we have to do is eliminate human failure.

Sounds simple.

Ever see a boom collapse?

Ever see a chain fail?

Construction is a dangerous gig. Things happen when moving tons of material. Risks can be reduced and mitigated; but they'll never be eliminated.

I agree though RIP and get well soon to the guys involved.

“that every major screw up was worker caused....lack of proper supervision”

Little bit a a contradiction, isn’t it?

Byrom suggested it may have been related to a gas line.

That's more believable than

Story 1 - Generator Explosion.

Story 2 - Boiler Explosion

But I'm sticking to an artillery shell from Fort Hood until the truth comes out. (Center Fuel Tank, anyone?)
