Justice Kennedy Retires, and the Legal and Political Ramifications Are Immense
NRO ^ | 27 June 2018 | David French

Posted on 06/27/2018 9:18:01 PM PDT by lowbuck

Earlier this afternoon, Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement. Court observers long thought it was possible that he’d step down after this most recent term, but now it’s confirmed. The moment has arrived. In the first two years of his first term, President Trump is set to nominate just as many Supreme Court justices as Clinton, Bush, and Obama nominated in all eight years of their presidencies. That means that no matter what happens the rest of his presidency — whether it’s cut short by scandal or it extends to two full terms — he’ll make an indelible mark on the Court. Trump will have an enduring judicial legacy. . . snip

So much for a quiet summer. The next weeks and months may well define the Supreme Court for a generation — and help decide who controls Congress. Buckle up. It’s going to be a wild ride.

Didn’t NRO want Hillary to win instead of Trump?

It reshuffled the deck of cards for the November election. Whatever strategy the Democrats had...is finished.

Adding to this mess, if McCain does intend to vote against the nominee...he’ll have to physically show up and I don’t think he’s capable of doing that.

“It will be imperative that conservatives closely evaluate Trump’s potential picks, but that person — no matter his or her record — will not only possess immense power, they’ll face immense pressure. May he or she possess not just the right philosophy, but also the necessary character to do all the job requires.”

Yeah, right. NRO is made up of dedicated NeverTrumpers who already evaluated Trump and said, “No Way!”

Trump is far more conservative than NRO a-holes. For them to say that conservatives need to really evaluate Trump’s picks is frankly asinine.

Conservatives need to evaluate NRO for their extreme liberalism.

Kennedy was appointed by Reagan. So his replacement belongs entirely to conservatives.

Trumps rallies may just be where red state Dems are trying to survive the November Red Wave. The folks have a real reason to turnout for the gop now. SCOTUS is huuugh as DJT would say.

I would like to see his tumor receive a grand entrance, though.

What a sacrifice to give one’s own life to rid humanity of a threat!

“Kennedy was appointed by Reagan. So his replacement belongs entirely to conservatives.”

Nope and Freepers should know better.

There is nothing in the Constitution about Conservatives or Democrats getting turns on appointing judges.

When there is a vacancy on SCOTUS whoever is POTUS at the time gets nominate and if the Senate approves He is in. If he runs out of time and a new President is elected before the Senate approves then that President gets to nominate.

Enjoy, but...
It only takes one appointment to turn the SC back to 5-4 against the country and Constitution.

One.

If French had his way, Hillary would have been President and we’d be looking at a far-left Supreme Court for a generation.

I’ve said for a long time that Trump is much more in the style of the fathers of the conservative movement such as Alexis de Toqueville and Russel Kirk than those who go around trotting out the label as a form of ideological purity testing.

“America is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”

- Alexis de Toqueville

The REAL change on the court will be if Trump gets to replace Ginsburg, Breyer, Sotomayor or Kagan.

Gorsuch was a wash, politically speaking. Granted he is a much younger man than Scalia was.

Kennedy’s replacement, depending on who it is, will only be a HALF vote better than Kennedy at best. Again they will be a lot younger than Kennedy.

So, while it is GREAT that Hillary or some other liberal didn’t get to fill these spots, the political makeup of the court will not have markedly changed even after Kennedy’s replacement is seated.

It will, at best, be one half a vote more conservative.

To make a REAL difference, we need one of those four liberal traitors to leave. Sooner rather than later is my hope.
