Donald Trump’s nominee for the supreme court will have to be resisted: New Democratic lion needed
The Manchester Guardian ^ | June 28, 2018 | Jill Abramson

The campaign against the president’s zealots will be a major test of strength for civil rights and abortion rights groups. A new Democratic lion is needed

Republican president who is eager to build a clear, conservative majority on the United States supreme court – and too sure of his political ground – overreaches. He picks a rightwing zealot for the open seat created by the retirement of a justice. At stake in the subsequent political battle over his nomination is the constitutional right of American women to have an abortion.

This was the Washington drama that unfolded in 1987 – when the president was Ronald Reagan, and his supreme court nominee was the controversial Robert Bork. Over a quarter of a century later, history is about to repeat itself in the latest crucial political test of the Donald Trump era.

Anthony Kennedy, who this week announced his retirement as a justice of the supreme court, was a decent man. His decisions upholding gay rights and legalising gay marriage will earn him a deserved place in history. Although some of his votes on abortion cases were bad, at the most pivotal moment – in a watershed 1992 decision – he voted to uphold the Roe v Wade supreme court decision to safeguard a woman’s right to an abortion. Granted, Kennedy’s votes in this latest term were consistently awful and solidly conservative, but there were other crucial moments when he was the swing vote and chose to uphold human rights and decency. His replacement, if Trump gets his way, will have none of those moderating tendencies.

Already Trump’s first court pick, Neil Gorsuch, has formed an unholy alliance with the most rightwing justice, Clarence Thomas....

The left has experience trashing good people. Bork. Thomas. Trump. They will throw everything they have at the nominee. They will find some whore willing to say that he did such and such thing, they will pay her big bucks, and cnn will go wild with the story for 4 weeks.

So why do the libretards think that they should have much say in the selection. They got beat severely in the last election because we had enough and kicked them out. They lost their dictatorship.

You mean the Democrats need a new womanizing drunk to smear Trump’s SCOTUS picks?

At the time of the Bork nomination, Ted Kennedy, the Democratic senator and liberal lion, roared loud and long

That was a belch.

Yeah... but at least we have the internet now.

If we had it then, we might have been able to save Bork.

The Left is in a world of hurt right now.

That’s why it is vitally important this is a solid pick.

We’ll have the lifetime of the next pick to pay for whatever mistake is made.

The wrong pick, and we’ve got a 5-4 upside down situation on our hands.

We should be praying for Trump to get the best person possible.

So, it was ok for liberal presidents to pack the court with all liberal picks, but Conservatives can’t do that, huh?

Sorry jackasses, but “affirmative action” doesn’t cover political ideology.

Trump can give you a big ol’ “I WON” just like oblammo did, and to the winner, goes the spoils.

We had to “man up” and endure eight years of the commie muslim, now it’s your turn.

It isn't going to happen. And the reason it isn't going to happen is that the "resist we much" approach to politics adopted so enthusiastically by the Democrat rank and file leaves them no political capital with which to influence these matters. You have to have something to trade in politics - we don't like Candidate A, so we'll support Candidate B if you nominate him/her instead, and we'll throw in support for policy C to sweeten the pot - that sort of horse trading is the lifeblood of politics. Reflexively obstructing every least proposal takes that out of the running - no ante, no game. It's the reason childish obstructionism is relatively rare, (but not lately); you can't both run the machine and throw sand in the gears. It's one or the other.

Teddy Kennedy knew this full well and was very, very good at it. Teddy Kennedy is dead. And anyone stupid enough to try to strike a deal with the likes of Chuck Schumer deserves what he gets.

Since when did “interpret the laws based on the constitution” become extreme right wing? For interesting reading read the opinion on any case from both ginsberg and thomas. Then read ginsberg versus a junion high school girls essay, then play “which one was written by the junior highschooler”
