Reuters global editor apologizes for telling Trump 'blood is on your hands' after Annapolis shooting

An editor at the international news agency Reuters apologized late Thursday night after saying to President Trump on Twitter that “blood is on your hands” shortly after a deadly mass shooting at an Annapolis newspaper that left five people dead.

In a Thursday afternoon tweet that has since been deleted, global and breaking news editor Rob Cox wrote, "This is what happens when @realDonaldTrump calls journalists the enemy of the people. Blood is on your hands, Mr. President. Save your thoughts and prayers for your empty soul."

Cox deleted the tweet after considerable backlash and later apologized for not keeping with Reuters' Trust Principles" and allowing his emotions to lead him to making a "snap judgment" surrounding the shooter's motivation.

"When I saw the news today that a mass shooter had targeted the employees of a newspaper in Maryland I responded emotionally and inappropriately," Cox wrote.

"Though my comments were entirely personal, they were not in keeping with the Reuters Trust Principles and my own standards for letting facts, not snap judgments, guide my understanding," he continued.

"My experience as a member of the community of Newtown, Connecticut in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook tragedy, combined with the possibility that my colleagues in the press were being targeted, pushed me into a state of emotional distress," he added.

“I am sorry for my comments, which I quickly deleted and have disavowed, and especially remorseful if they did anything to distract from the thoughts and love we must send to the community of Annapolis,” Cox concluded.

Reuters Editor-in-Chief Steve Adler said the agency does not condone Cox's behavior and "will take appropriate action."

They’re just making sure that 50 million drones and zombies out there are ready to jump to violence at a moment’s notice, even when based on empty lies... and this is just another step towards cementing it in their heads.

Another “reporter” at “The Republican” has resigned over a false Twitter post linking President Trump to Maryland newspaper shooter. We do get a scalp every now and then.

#FakeNews Reuters

They fear Trump.

Never would have walked it back before Trump.

This should get a Trump rally mention.

It’s nice to see the media forced to apologize these days... how many is that so far?

In the past, some wimp-noodle like Bush would have been hounded until he was cowering in the corner - “you called media names! you’re responsible!! what do you have to say for yourself??”

And then he would have had a blue-ribbon panel commissioned of media, hosted so they can be present ‘solutions’ on how he could be more civil in the future.

Less an apology than an excuse. Fire him.

Just as a delicious ironic frosting, it is this very behavior that prompts Trump to call journalists enemies of the people! Snap judgments and emotional self-righteousness, coupled with a refusal to acknowledge their own shortcomings.

proving one fact, the hate is there the blame is there, just needs a little news story to bring it out. This moron would have been overjoyed to find out that the guy did it because of things Trump said but it had nothing to do with Trump. NO empathy for the families, just slime Trump.

“... I responded emotionally and inappropriately ....”

Why can’t all media of all stripes just report the known facts and refrain from flinging wild accusations? I guess the temptation to virtue signal at every turn is too great.

Every Open Border supporter has blood on their hands every time an Illegal Invader commits a violent Crime or kills someone when they drive drunk.

We have enough Crime coming from Liberals without having to Import more.

I suppose its human nature to want to explain yourself when apologizing; however, I've come to learn it just makes yourself look more of an ass.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have done/said that, I was wrong" - then stop talking, shake your head and look disappointed with yourself which is easy if you are truly apologetic.

If you do this and people keep piling on - a lot of time they start to look like the ass.

There is absolutely no way they could tie President Trump to this. It seems this guy had it out for them long ago. But that never stops the left from trying. The stupid news guy didn’t even apologize for being completely wrong, only that he said it out loud.

It’s a bit surprising that anyone would make him resign, with this completely morally bereft media.

I don’t pretend to know with what level of sincerity this apology was written. It was the correct thing to do, but unfortunately shows one of the problems with the leftist media mindset. They react and emote immediately after a shock or awful event. Publicly. It distracts from reporting facts and distorts the reader/viewer perception.

I was a little girl when JFK was assassinated and well remember the tv coverage. The reporters were somber, strong and professional. Even Walter Cronkite - who I later came to despise - was composed given what happened.

In general, I am unable to respect reporters today. And the president hasn’t influenced my thinking. I stopped trusting them decades ago.
