Turks on the whole are a very unsocial, nasty people who hate Americans.
I was Incirlik in 1982. I would very much agree with that. I didnt exactly have any warm fuzzy feelings for them either. I figured those chumps would feel more comfortable being our enemies, than our friends. I still feel that way. I got no time for Turkey.
There are some here on FR who grew up there. Watching this is painful for them.
I’m sure the Islamists are what you said. Turks are not noted for human kindness, but I’m sure there are exceptions.
Most of those that are persecuted in Turkey are kind people in general. Greek, Armenian, Alevi, Jews, Ezidi and Assyrians. All of them have been targets of Massacres or Genocide.
I spent two semesters as a visiting professor at Marmara University in Istanbul. Granted, that was almost twenty years ago, but I did not find that to be the case. My students were fully equal to those I taught in the U.S., and the Turks I met on a daily basis outside the university were very friendly. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there. Things may be different now, of course.
