FULL TITLE: Witnesses say armed good Samaritan shot, killed by Portland State University police while breaking up fight

He was identified by his co-workers at the U.S. Postal Service as a father of three, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting.

Video of the clash outside the Cheerful Tortoise bar shows Washington putting himself between two men. When the brawlers lunged for each other, he fell to the ground and his weapon fell to the ground.

“The gun slipped out of the holster when he had fallen, and I think he may have tried to retrieve it,” Keyaira Smith told Oregon Public Broadcasting.

One of the two responding officers — identified as Shawn McKenzie and James Dewey — can be seen appearing to step in and intervene in the fight as Washington stumbled. Another officer can be heard immediately bellowing “drop the gun” as Washington scrambled to get up. About a dozen shots were fired and Washington died on the sidewalk outside the sports bar.

Carry rule number one...do not insert yourself into a violent situation if your are carrying. In many states it is considered going armed. Self-defense may no longer be a legal position.

This will bring out everybody. Guns, black good guy, white cops, etc.

(Another reason I got a better, more secure holster.)

Portland has embraced the dark side...I left 20 years ago.

Yet another tragedy. Yes, the victim made a mistake. But he acted as any normal person would. If you drop something, your first instinct is to pick it up.

And I suppose the police acted normally as well. Guy reaches for a gun, might as well shoot him. This wasn’t even a man-with-a-gun call. But he had a gun. So the 2A be damned. Might as well shoot him.

I suppose the DA will rule this a good shoot. And many people - myself included - while become even more wary and distrustful of the police.

“And many people - myself included - while become even more wary and distrustful of the police.”

And that is the really sad part.

Yes, Internal Affairs almost always determines it’s a righteous shoot.

Pretty sure Texas is more reasonable. At least it used to be.

I am stuck in Portland doing QC on high rise buildings, it is a creepy cesspool of the lowest denomination of humanity. From the homeless bums crapping in the streets to the weird excuses for police, the place makes my skin crawl, I can’t wait to escape. Lots of high rise projects going on, but I never had nightmares until I moved here. I live on the west side, best part of the subs but have to enter the craphole at 330 AM tomorrow and dodge zombies

Let’s see if this is enough to provoke a BLM excuse.

With the political tensions the way they are right now, Hmmmmm.

Bad situation all around.

Shitty holster. If you are going to CCW IBW or otherwise, spend a few bucks for some really good gear.

I do know this about it: Its turning left faster than a NASCAR race, why even bother to vote since they have mail in ballots only, they will all be counted by leftists

Never try to catch a gun. Not if someone tosses it to you. If you fumble and drop it, let it drop. Not if it’s sliding across the floor. If a gun has energy you don’t control run away not toward. A moving hang gun not attached to a human is dangerous.

That dancing cop tried to short circuit a firearm with its own kinetic energy. Bang!

Ten years ago I was an unquestioning supporter of the police. I have since made a 180 degree turn. And as you said, it’s sad.

Not that anyone asked, but two factors are responsible for that. On a personal level, I no longer find my local police to be respectful, or even civil. Ask them a reasonable question, and you’ll get looked at like you’re some kind of worm, a worm who has no right to address a great man.

And then there’s all the shootings. A dog barks. Dog gets shot. A man reaches for his driver’s license. Man gets shot. Crawling, crying man obeys every police command. He reaches back to hike up his pants and gets shot, shot to death. DA rules it a good shoot.

(That last reference was the December 2017 Mesa police shooting.)

Another incidence of trigger-happy cops ... and once they decide to shoot - its not to wound, its TO KILL - a DOZEN f’n shots...you think one in the leg might have got his attention instead?

Yeah .. maybe in Europe ... where the cops are taught to “shoot to wound”, and learn to do so quite well ...

The police training in the US of A is responsible for incidents like this ... and its a NATIONAL problem.

It needs to change....I won’t hold my breath...I can hear the ranks closing already...

Correction to my post #7: The cop involved in the Mesa shooting was found not guilty in a jury trial. It was yet another “I feared for my life” deal.

The cop didn’t actually see a gun. And that’s because the victim had no gun. But the victim was shot to death anyway. The whole thing makes me sick. And the aquital makes it even worse.

Crossbreed, Whitehat, Alien Gear, and Desanti are a few good ideas for holsters. And a good gun belt. Bigfoot, Bianchi, etc. double layer heavy duty belt is a must. If you’re styling leave the weapon at home. Dress to carry and stay out of bad places/bars/alleys/hi crime locations. Need advice from a true pro “Mosaad Ayoob” along with others. Your post is spot on. Ask yourself how much is your life is worth. Operate accordingly.

my dtr lives right in Portland...she and hubby love it...are urban "farmers" or should say "gardeners" since she got rid of her chickens....

I don't see the attraction...Portland itself is not pretty...

however, they do have a LOT of neat places to eat....

The fobus and kydex holsters are good. You can get them in various retention levels.
