Amul Thapar: Trump Country's Perfect SCOTUS Choice
Real Clear Politics ^ | July 3, 2018 | Scott Jennings

Amul Thapar: Trump Country's Perfect SCOTUS Choice President Trump — already a conservative hero for appointing Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court and for his swift remaking of the federal appellate courts — can again make history by choosing Judge Amul Thapar of Kentucky to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy. Thapar, the son of Indian immigrants who came to America legally, is the product of public schools in Toledo, Ohio. He was the first ever judge of South Asian descent appointed to the federal bench and would be the first person of any Asian heritage appointed to the Supreme Court. Thapar is a history-making choice for a president who loves to make history. Trump often zigs when other presidents would have zagged, as the Washington Post noted this weekend, and he can again defy “the swamp” by appointing someone like Thapar who is squarely from outside of it. For conservatives, Thapar is a dream choice. He’s an originalist, a term associated with Justices Clarence Thomas, Gorsuch and the late Antonin Scalia. Imagine a Supreme Court where the two leading conservative originalists are an African-American and an Indian-American. Trump can absolutely shatter the stereotypes liberals throw at Republicans by having Thapar join Thomas to defend and indeed crusade for the U.S. Constitution.

Trump does not seem to go by identity politics. Aside from being prolife I do believe he cares much on social issues. He is gender neutral. Using that as an overlay my guess is he goes for this guy if he is 2a positive.

Recall the scene from the 80’s movie - ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ - where the teacher has a heart attack at his desk while reading the newspaper, and nobody realizes he’s dead.

Nor shall you see any commitment on reversing of Roe v. Wade.

Technically, Roe v. Wade was a power grab by the Federal government, usurping the powers reserved to the states under the Tenth Amendment, and could be argued against on that basis. There is NOTHING in the US Constitution that authorizes the exercise of any right of abortion on demand, and in fact, the Constitution is completely mute on such an assertion that this could be anything other than a personal decision, and that only in conformity to existing law codes. Something about “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness”, and only by a very strained interpretation of that phrase (which appears only in the Declaration of Independence).

"I think he should be saved for when Ginsburg goes. That’s where the real fight is going to be. If anyone thinks they are going crazy over Kennedy being replaced, they just need to wait and see what happens when Trump gets to replace a leftie on the Court."

Completely agree.

Amy Barrett now and then Thapar when Ginsburg is out which is when the real fireworks are going to start (assuming the (R)'s hold the Senate!!!) because that's when a tectonic shift in the court will happen. A straight up socialist, feminist, leftist for a Constitutionalist, "textualist".

The nominations being the other way around would be a much more difficult fight because then the libs would have a more 1 for 1 argument coming down to legal philosophy only and really nothing else.

The (D)'s also wouldn't be able to say the court lost a female.

I haven’t even paid much attention to the nominees because I trust Trump so much. But this guy looks like the money pick. I noticed at yesterday press briefing with Sarah, the Indian journalist asked her when Trump is visiting India. I couldn’t hear well but I think he said India loves the President.

I would like Amul Thapar, and I think he’ll be put on SCOTUS by President Trump eventually. Political calculation says it will be Amy Coney Barrett and rumor is swing Republican Senators Murkowski & Collins want only her. Their votes are needed for confirmation otherwise Dems like Manchin need to be recruited.

The optics are good. Judge Amy is a young, beautiful, Scalia-clerk, constitution-textualist, Catholic, mother of seven. What better way to show President Trump is “for women”. How could the ‘pussy hat’ women demonstrate against a woman? How would the Democrat male Senators look going against her? Could Michael Moore or Cher get a million people to march on Washington against her? Picking her for SCOTUS doesn’t have any downsides. That’s why the hit pieces are already coming out against Judge Amy. The other side already knows.

He is considered a close friend and protege of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, whose home state of Kentucky falls within the 6th Circuit. McConnell has called Thapar “a qualified judge with an impressive legal mind” and has praised Thapar for always applying the law fairly. On the other end of the spectrum, Elizabeth Warren, the left-leaning senator from Massachussetts, vehemently opposed Thapar when he was nominated to the sixth circuit.

WHO considers Thapar a "close friend" of McConnell? McTurtle praised him, that's all that is clear since it's a direct quote, and Warren aka Pocohantas hates him. Thapar sounds like an EXCELLENT pick.

Then he’s not a devout Hindu. A Hindu who follows strictly would not be in favor of PAS at all, any more than abortion.

Thapar is a Catholic, apparently, as his children attend parochial schools.

The article doesn’t say where Thapar attended any schools other than public school in Toledo. At least he didn’t go to any Ivy League ones. If he did attend Berzerkly, not everyone there is a commiepuke. Did you read he went to UC Berk some other place?
