I know a guy who had one incident in college where he spent a night in jail. 20 years later on a vacation he crossed into Canada and was told he had a criminal record and could not proceed.
Turned out for a minor infraction such as his he was able to post a few hundred dollar bond and allowed into the country.
It's not safe to have a sizeable underclass with justification for not supporting the country.
Our welfare system and the looming crisis in our so-called "entitlements" like Social Security and Medicare bode ill for the future. Millennials are going to resent the Boomers bigly.
I knew a kid a couple decades ago, about 20 years old, a pansy, who went down to visit his brother, not a pansy, at his military base, in Georgia, maybe Fort Benning, I can’t remember.
His brother had some kind of personal revolver down there that he didn’t want to keep on base, sent it home with little bro.
Little Bro decided to drive all night, pushed the gun under the seat, got pulled over by a couple Billy Bob Smokies looking for easy pickin’s. The kid would have just got a phony speeding ticket but felt compelled to blurt,”I have a gun”—that’s all he could get out.
They dragged him back to a ‘judge,’ who eventually bought his story but fined him $500 and had to forfeit the revolver. I think they had to call his brother to get a guarantee on the cash.
So five years later the kid (pansy) is playing Puck in Midsummer Night’s Dream, in Shakespeare in the Park, and the troupe heads up to Regina, Canada. His name is flagged, they pull him off the buss-—and in his case the did NOT allow him to proceed...he had to check into the nearest hotel and wait for his ma to pick him up...lol.
One of those trips I was coming into the U.S. in De Toilet very early in the morning, around 4am, the lone Customs officer asked where I'd been, and the drug questions. I was driving a large Chevy Van with no windows in the rear. She required me to pull over and open the back. She then poked the large olive green laundry bag near the rear. "What's this?" she asked. I told her, "my last weeks dirty laundry, would you like to open it up for inspection?" She could see a military style foot locker with my name stenciled on it, and several sets of starched and pressed Army uniforms on hangers on hooks in the back.
She decided wisely to not mess with my dirty clothes. Slowed me down maybe 15 minutes.
Flying into DTW from Asia was always a hassle too. They think everyone coming in from there is a drug mule.
Canada has an immigration system based on points and family unification. This system really screws you over and is very arduous. BUT, if you are a refugee claimant, our acceptance rate is 50%!!!! I shit you not. They basically take the refugees word for it with no vetting. Which is why we have let in 100,000 Syrians under Trudeau. In fact 99% of our refugee program has been filled by Syrians over the last 2 years, despite the fact Haitians have a far better argument for refugees (as one example).

Canada's immigration generosity extends only to those who speak English fluently and have engineering degrees.
