I like the Tom Rush rendition of Circle Game, too. My favorite, though, was done by Ian and Sylvia. Just Wow.

Bread was great. Talk about great: did you know that David Gates, Leon Russell, and Anita Bryant were all at Will Rogers HS in Tulsa at around the same time, the late 50s? How does that happen?

Thanks. I’ll check out the Ian and Sylvia version.

It’s often a case that the first version you hear becomes the “correct” version against which you compare all others.

Unfortunately, the first version of Circle I heard was Joni Mitchell; I found her stylings puerile and annoying. Her lyrics were usually interesting, though; good old hippie poetry.

This is a fairly decent rendition (albeit lo-fi as can be!):

A masterpiece, isn’t it? I’ve been listening to that recording for more than 50 years, and never tire of it.

In 1972, I drove Bill Evans from Appleton, WI to Minneapolis, about a six hour drive. He talked about cars the whole time. He was a great man, and it distressed me to see him go down.

I missed this while I was on vacation. Lots of good choices and a couple that I am surprised did not make the list:

Best recalled as a hit by the Eagles, I am still partial to the writer’s version:

My ol ’55- Tom Waits

Originally by the Coasters, Leon Russell does a great job with this one:

Young Blood Medley (Live)– Leon Russell)

“I just wish I could write a song like Guy Clark can” – Johnny Cash

Old Friends – Guy Clark

Old Friends they shine like diamonds
Old Friends you can always call
Old Friends Lord you can't buy 'em
You know it's Old Friends after all

That is one of my favorite songs and Rod Stewart's version is the best (IMHO).

Dylan of course, wrote the song, and the story goes he did so the day his first son was born. Holding the baby, the words flowed into his head. He then sat down and completed the song in less time then it takes to sing it.

Here is a version by Dylan:

Forever Young - Bob Dylan
