A Connecticut man who was assaulted by three juveniles while at work has been sentenced to prison for stabbing one of the attackers.
The Connecticut Post reports 21-year-old Jeffrey Sumpter of Bridgeport received 18 months in jail Monday at a Stamford courthouse.
The paper reported that Sumpter who was convicted of felony first-degree assault also will have to spend three years following his release on probation. If he breaks the law during that time, Sumpter could be made to serve all or part of a 42-month prison sentence.
Sumpter was working at a Dunkin Donuts in Norwalk last October when he was jumped by three males. During the assault, Sumpter stabbed one of them in the leg.
I was defending myself, Sumpter said during the hearing.
Judge John Blawie told Sumpter that he believed his version of events, but had to follow the letter of the law.
Under Connecticut law, assault victims cannot use deadly force if they are able to retreat from their attackers. By contrast, 27 states most notably Florida have passed so-called stand-your-ground laws, which entitle citizens to use force in self-defense if there is a reasonable belief of a threat.

Self defense is illegal in communist states like CT.
Connecticut is a sh**hole country, like all the other libturd run states. My condolences to my brothers and sisters behind enemy lines.
More proof that “the law is an ass”
Armed citizens are an occupational hazard to criminals.
Isn’t self defense a human right?
Not if the judge thinks you should try to outrun a gang of violent teenagers, it seems.
This case needs to go to the USSC. Americans have a 2nd amendment right which includes the right to us it when attacked!
What a DUMBASS JUDGE!
WTH? Are they becoming the u.k.? How darecyoundefend yourself. Is there more to the story? Probably.
That is an obvious and simple cleavage point between Leftists and Conservatives.
To Conservatives, it is a God-given right and delineated as such in our Constitution.
To the Leftists, to whom government is God, it is the job of the government to defend you.
Thankfully, leftists were far fewer during the formative stages of this country. We would have been snuffed out in the cradle.
F*** Connecticut!!!
Connecticut: a state run by idiots. Who passes a law against self-defense? The kid was lucky. Here in GA the perp would be toes up from extensive lead poisoning and the victim would get a pat on the back.
CT sucks... liberal state... go figure...
Were I governor of Connecticut, I would pardon him before the sun set today.
No mention of the perps persuasion either, but one can guess they were not of the vanilla flavor or else the MSM would be all over this.
I solved this problem for me and my family in 2006. Wont ever go back.
Connecticut law requires Sumpter to retreat from the beating he was given at the Dunkin Donuts where he worked. After being assaulted inside the coffee shop, Sumpter ran outside and stabbed one of the men.
I'd like to know more about this case because, notwithstanding the bolded fact, prison sounds like overkill.
The Torries have finally succeeded in returning Connecticut to Britian.
I was one of those schmucks. Living in CT even knowing full well how terrible it is.
I had this philosophy that I had to save money to leave CT. At the end of 6 years of just struggling to get along I finally packed my car - leaving behind everything I had - and left penniless and struggling.
This is why people aren’t leaving CT. They feel tied to it because they can never save up enough money to leave. If they go one single day without work they are financial ruin.
CT is full of poor people. My family can’t even afford to visit me with a 2 hour drive. Since leaving CT I work half as much, have no stress and I live better.
But to the Northeasterner (From NY to Maine) the costs are too daunting. They won’t leave a $35/hour job for a $20/hr job because it’s against their code. So they sit and stew in that stupid state.
And I even left that state 4 weeks before the Sandy Hook shooting. I left when the gun rights weren’t really that bad (Except the whole Clinton ban thing that CT never sundowned)
I can’t move back to CT now. Everything I own is illegal there. My family wants me to move back, but I refuse. I’d rather live in a tent in the woods than in an apartment anywhere in CT.
