Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 213,000 in June, and the unemployment rate rose to 4.0 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

Job growth continued strong. The unemployment rate rose because the labor force participation rate rose, perhaps because of pay increases. Participation has shown no real trend during the past two years. Essentially rising participation within age cohorts has off-set continuing aging of the population. We'll see if this uptick in participation is transitory or the start of a real recovery in participation.

Excellent jobs report with very strong growth in mfg sector.

Sometimes job growth increases the number of people looking, which raises the rate in spite of the job growth.
