Behind tall brick walls and secure windows, hundreds of patients at Washington state's largest psychiatric hospital live in conditions that fail U.S. health and safety standards, while overworked nurses and psychiatrists say they are navigating a system that punishes employees who speak out despite critical staffing shortages.
"They don't have enough staff to protect patients, or provide them with the bare minimum of care," said Lisa Bowser, whose mother spent two years at Western State Hospital and suffered dozens of falls and assaults.
"Going there was like going into hell," said Bowser, who has sued the state-run facility. "I honestly thought they would kill her before I could get her out."

It is difficult to provide a supportive environment for a patient group with wide ranging needs.
Do you medicate or council?
Is a "white room" really effective at improving the patient's outlook?
Or, are we supposed to be content with keeping them from harming themselves?
Can we afford to pay and motivate the staff to provide the care the patients need?
Thanks to our “wonderful” Governor, Jay Inslee, who is way too busy running for president to pay any attention to anything happening in our state - he’s leaving it all up to the AG, Bob Ferguson, who is also too busy suing Donald Trump and bad mouthing the police to pay attention to the state either!
Washington was always a bit left of center but now I think they are trying to make Illinois, New York, and California look sane and stable!
Put a special tax on marijuana to pay for improvements.
The state is the home of some of the most notorious cases of witch hunts during the child sex abuse hysteria of the nineties, with opportunistic law enforcement, crackpot social workers and incompetent judges destroying innocent lives right and left for years.
The domestic law courts are manned by totally corrupt magistrates who will happily deliver a child up to abuse for a price. If you are a father in a custody dispute, forget it.
Liberal haven. Yeah.
So where’s all the liberal love?
Mental facilities are historically easy targets for scandal-mongers and hyperbolic muckrakers. I would guess those places are not half as bad as this hyperventilating snowflake makes them out to be.
I have close contact with someone who despite having tons of evidence against the alcoholic and mentally deficient father, never the less could only muster "joint" custody...that father eventually ran over his little one with his riding lawn mower and that child lost a lower leg due to it...
the conditions at Western State hospital may be bad..but all be assured the staff gets very handsome wages and fat pensions...
How is Western State Hospital any worse than living on the streets in progressive homeless camps?
No healthcare institution has enough staff. That is what 100 years of government suppressing the number of doctors and healthcare professionals gets you.
