THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

JEROME KERN

SWING TIME

After Fred and Ginger made their debut as a dancing duo in RKO’s 1933 film “Flying Down to Rio,” producer Pandro Berman reached out to the leading composers of the Great American Songbook to each write the score for a given movie musical. I’ve already covered the musicals written by Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and George Gershwin. This was Jerome’s and Dorothy Fields’ 1936 contribution to musical immortality.

“PICK YOURSELF UP”

Could anything be funnier than Fred pretending to be unable to dance with Ginger trying to teach him? The kiss-off line in this video is hysterical.
