Ex-GOP majority leader: Republicans must protect Mueller [RINO Frist]
The Hill ^ | July 7, 2018 | John Bowden

Posted on 07/07/2018 1:43:23 PM PDT by jazusamo

Former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) warned Republicans against continuing their "assault" against Robert Mueller, writing in an op-ed Friday that the GOP must let Mueller continue his investigation.

In an opinion piece for The Washington Post, the former Tennessee Republican urged Republicans to fight for the "rule of law," even if it meant going up against the Trump administration.

"I am also a Republican because I believe in the rule of law. Republicans must fight for that principle today — even if it means pushing back against a Republican administration," Frist wrote.

"It isn’t easy to tell a president of your own party that he is wrong. But the assault on Mueller’s investigation does not help the president or his party," he added. "[But] the president must remember that only Mueller’s exoneration can lift the cloud hanging over the White House."

Frist went on to argue that claims of "runaway legal authority," such as those made by former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort in an attempt to have the charges against him dismissed, do not hold up when compared to Mueller's record.

"I have worried over the years about runaway legal authority, and I’ve battled against activist judges. I don’t worry about Robert Mueller," he said.

"And his investigation is getting results: By any objective standard, he has moved swiftly, obtaining 23 indictments and five guilty pleas in just more than a year."

Trump has frequently characterized Mueller's investigation as a "witch hunt," and has accused the special counsel of going beyond the original scope of the investigation to pursue charges not related to alleged Russian election interference.

Republicans have frequently pointed to text messages sent by former members of Mueller's probe as evidence of pervasive anti-Trump bias that they say tainted the investigation from the start.

President Trump has forced us all to look at who and what our government is and it isn’t pretty. We can’t go back and yet who will fill the President’s shoes when he leaves office?

I look back over the years and can not think of one bit of legislation or regulation that ever benefitted the American voter or taxpayer. Every damn thing they do is to enhance their re-election chances and guarantee big donations.

That said, we the people have become derelict in our oversight responsibilities and now huge agencies like the IRS, the FBI and the Justice Department think they are above the law.

We can blame GOP and the Rats but in the end we allowed them to grow into corrupt behemoths that are out of controls.

Believes in the rule of law? Then why are they not clamoring for Hillary Clinton to be in jail? Why? I have ZERO respect for the Republican party.

Every day or so, they give my tagline credence.

Yes! Who knew?

It’s a club that mere mortals are not allowed to join and thinking about it, who would want to?

No truer words have ever been written! And now, when we have a real chance to reverse course, we find that the GOPE is not on our side like maybe we thought they would be.

It truly is the uni-party, united to help themselves and selected groups. We, who pay the bills, are not thought of at all.

I wish President Trump would consider starting his own party, a party based on law and not feelings.
