Starbucks is going strawless.
The coffee company announced Monday that it will phase out plastic straws from all of its stores by 2020.
The changes will help Starbucks (SBUX) eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws per year, the company said.
Plastic straws contribute to ocean pollution and pose a danger to marine life. Some governments have begun banning them.
To eliminate straws, Starbucks is transitioning from the flat, plastic lids that require them, to ones that feature a raised lip you can drink from. The new designs have drawn comparisons to an adult "sippy cup."
Frappuccino drinks will still be served with dome lids, but with straws made from paper or compostable plastic. Coffee drinkers who prefer straws for other beverages can request the new eco-friendly versions.
Some Starbucks drinks, like cold brew with cold foam, are already served in cups with strawless lids.

In the last 20 years, all I’ve bought from Starbucks is plain coffee anyway, and I haven’t even done that in roughly 9 years. They’re just too expensive, even for coffee. And their other drinks are expensive both cost wise and calorie wise.
And then there is their politics...
We ship our plastic “recycling” to them, they dump it in the rivers and it ends up in the ocean.
But the liberals still get to feel good about themselves.
Sippy cups?
Not really. Straws make up a large percentage of the plastics that end up in the ocean. I think it's a good idea for folks to cut down on using them.
What about the plastic stoppers for the cup lids? Don’t those pose a threat to marine life too?
Sippy cups?
yep, suck on that ,LOL
China stopped taking outside recycle materials Dec 2017. Not sure where it's going now, but it will soon start piling up here stateside.
I have never nor will I ever patronize Starbucks, so I could care less what they do, however....I also remember paper straws and paper bags at the stores. I hate plastic bags and wish they would eliminate them too. I saw countless number of plastic bags in tree tops and wrapped around telephone poles and wires all over Florida and Mississippi after the last hurricane.
A small step to help reduce the glut of plastics we have floating around in this world. Whats the big deal? Why should you care? This isn’t going to solve the problem, but it certainly doesn’t hurt.
Starbucks stock price is waaaaay down. They have reached market saturation and are closing some 150+ stores. Their CEO and CFO have quit...............
The original BSG is still my favorite of the two, despite the problems.
What is this Starshit you speak of?
I was thinking about plastic straws just the other day. I recalled as a child we had paper straws. A kind of a waxy paper straw.
I don’t have a problem with going back to paper straws. I don’t use straws very often. Or, perhaps a Nalgene straws that you kept with you and used it yourself like a fork or a spoon... if you absolutely positively needed to have a straw to drink with.
Just put the straws through sensitivity training.
Whatever happened to the waxed paper straws we used as kids? They are biodegradable.
I stopped using straws when I was about 12 years old. There is nothing I drink as an adult that requires a straw being in it.
Anyway, I’m in agreement with what the other poster here said, it’s a private company and they can do what they want as they will live with any consequences.
Hahaha! Good one!
Good question.
Afraid I can’t help. Don’t like expensive burnt coffee.
Burning plastics are unpleasant at best, polluting at worst. Hate to say it, but the eviroweenies are right once in a while.
