Army Corps to suspend flows from Lake Okeechobee(what a mess)

GLADES COUNTY, Fla. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will suspend water releases from Lake Okeechobee into the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie Estuaries starting Monday morning.

"As we look at operations in the system, we believe we can pause discharges for a short time to get additional input from staff on available options for moving water," said Col. Jason Kirk, Jacksonville District Commander. "We have implemented higher stages in the canal along the Tamiami Trail and we have implemented deviations to generate flexibility in operations at the southern end of the system to move additional water south. We want to ensure we are using all available flexibility before we resume discharges east and west."

To Sum up..man made issue...

Huge amounts of Toxic Green Algae are in the lake this year....

Because of flood Control decades ago...Water can flow into the lake many times faster then it can leave even if all outflows are opened...high water levels put pressure on the aging dike.

This year had record rain in May causing high water levels on the lake and to the water storage areas to the south..

There are three ways to get water out of the lake..west, east and south

West and east can release the most water through the rivers but the toxic slime will go with it...

The Corp opened up those east and West routes after the Record May rains...slime is everywhere now all the way to the coast

The Corp like to keep the level pf the lake between 12.5 and 15.5 feet..it's at 14.5 feet today...which is almost a foot above normal for this time of year..

The Tamiami Trail mentioned in the article..dammed up the water storage areas to the south blocking the natural flow to the everglades....it can only be pumped south now...they did raise 1 mile of the trail last year but many more miles are planned but will take years of construction

Rainfall from a tropical system can raise the lake very fast..Irma last year raised the lake 3.5 feet in a month to over 17 feet...

The lake is much higher this year then last at the time

So the corps would like the lower the lake level now by releasing water East and West but is under public pressure not to because of the green algea

They have released it all south apparently and we on the west coast have TOXIC gulf water full of TOXIC algae bloom and red tide in Fort Myers and beyond. You had better believe we are more than sick of this. This is the worst, but this has been going on now for way too long. There are going to be repercussions at the voting booth. People are pissed beyond words.

And the enviros want to make it like it was before all the dikes and canals were put in place. Not quite as simple as they would have you believe. With all the years it took to make it, how many to unmake it? 🤔

No water is being released as of now..1000 cfs was going south but it stopped the other day because of heavy rains south of the lake

5500 cfs is coming into the lake..alot of water is being held in the Chain of lakes in the upper kississmee basin too for now

at one time 4000 cfs was going west and 1800 cfs east..

“bureaucratese”

We’re telling you in advance that we’re going to try something different, so don’t bother suing us for not following the book.

I think they should turn it into biofuel.

I’m on the east side (Hobe Sound) same shit here people are pissed off. Fishing sucks because of these releases. We have to go way off shore to find blue water. And the rivers are chocked with green slime.

Gee. And here the “everglades-ever-greener” enviro’s were telling us that the “river” was going dry and the Everglades were drying up and the swamp was going to be destroyed and the world was ending ....

Only a few short summers ago!

well small steps are being taken..such as raising the Trail like I mentioned

They are also restoring the flood plain of the kissimee River north of the lake ..it was caneled up resulting in water flowing south faster instead of fanning out

Reminds me of the “Dial-A-Buzzword” generator I was handed in a technical writing class in college (a long time ago), the idea being to teach you to NOT generate that kind of nonsense.

The guy is still around and has an online version that is amusing to play with.

At least that isn’t an anopheles mosquito. Those carry malaria and dengue fever, and probably a few other undesirable consequences.

It’s a huge problem for our Madison Lakes, too. Madison: ‘Twenty Miles Surrounded by Reality.’ And a lot of toxic blue, slimy goo!
