Residents of the Greek island of Samos strongly opposed a proposition by the Greek Migration ministry to build a new refugee camp on their island. The residents gave a thundering “no” to the proposal.

The heads of the local community in Mitilinious called an open community on the village square to discuss building a new refugee camp on the grounds of a local army camp.

The local Syriza MP was invited to the gathering but he never appeared. Mr Michalis Aggelopoulos, declared their opposition on behalf of the local community, and their heads, including the mayor.

Their opinion was cheered by thousands of residents who were present. The residents have signed a resolution and sent it to the ministry of immigration.

Samos is one of the easternmost Aegean islands that is flooded by incoming migrants and refugees. The island’s low population cannot sustain the huge number of migrants.

In addition to current migrants arriving, 5000 migrants will return to the islands from Germany because of the new deal Prime Minister Tsipras signed with Angela Merkel.

It is the first time that the residents have declared so strongly their opposition to the migrant policy of Greece and the EU. The inhabitants of Samos were welcoming the migrants to their island, and some of them even opened up their own houses to them.

However, only a few years of having to live together with those migrants were enough to change their minds.

The ought to do what some of the Balkan nations are doing. Expedite their passage through to Germany and other more receptive countries. The Greeks were doing this but maybe the EU pressured them to stop.
