Caroline Glick: NATO Is the Author of Its Own Demise
Breitbart ^ | Caroline Glick

One of the interesting aspects of the hysteria is that NATO’s supporters never seem to think it is necessary to explain why it would be a bad idea to end the alliance.

*snip

NATO’s ineffectiveness ought to be the key issue of discussion when considering its future. But to date, that weakness has been largely overlooked in the rush to blame Trump for allegedly destroying America’s alliances.

*snip*

In an interview with Bloomberg last week, German Defense Minister Ursula Von Der Leyen insisted that the most important goal of Thursday’s summit would be “unity.”

*snip*

Notably, Von Der Leyen failed to mention who NATO’s opponents are. That was no fluke. The one thing that has been lacking in all of NATO’s post-Cold War interventions has been a common sense of strategic purpose.

*snip*

As for radical Islam, due to Turkish membership in NATO, and due to European refusal to take any significant steps to rein in radical Islamic forces in Europe or anywhere else, it is abundantly clear that NATO is not the proper vehicle for U.S.-led collective defense against Iran or other jihadist powers.

*snip*

As for President Trump, despite the bloviations of his critics, he bears no responsibility for NATO’s irrelevance. Trump did not cause NATO to have little role to play in fighting the key threats to American and global security. NATO has had nearly three decades to figure out how to do that. But it failed.

All that Trump has done is point out the reality of NATO’s decline — which his four predecessors refused to acknowledge.

Once the Warsaw Pact threat ended, there should have been a simple script written to downsize NATO within fifteen years to just a yearly exercise, and no real US troops posted in Europe. No one could bring themselves to say that.

Trump is correct. I would move EUCOM HQ’s out of Germany, and into Poland. I would leave the Navy port in Italy, but remove everything else. I would move the Spangdahlem wing over to Poland, and then send most all US troops back to the US. There simply isn’t a value of maintaining the bases/troops there.

Trump probably won't destroy NATO, but he will surely revise it into something useful.

Just another great achievement by our most effective president ever.

As an aside, it seems that Turkey's membership in NATO serves primarily as a curtain/shield behind which Islam's encroachment into Europe can be hidden.

Europe can't defend itself against Islam with NATO as long as NATO is compromised by having the enemy in its military and privy to that which is learned by NATO's (and member states') intelligence operations.

Which would be what exactly?

Poland is perfectly capable of defending itself. A third way, a buffer alliance comprised of Poland, Hungary, Slovakia wouldn't need our help. They could also not allow invaders to take over, assuming their leaders aren't bought off by the EU.

Then what's left of the EU could either figure out how to reverse its demise or not.

Exactly?

How about a European alliance that, for the most part, pays its own way and clearly identifies the enemy that has already conducted an invasion of almost every nook and cranny of Europe except for Hungary and Austria. After clearly identifying that enemy, how about developing and implementing a plan of action (with the necessary military force) capable achieving victory over (i.e. destroying) that enemy not just on home soil but back to the source.

European refusal to take any significant steps to rein in radical orthodox Islamic forces in Europe or anywhere else, it is abundantly clear that NATO is not the proper vehicle for U.S.-led collective defense against Iran or other jihadist powers.

Fixed it.

If one is to understand a thing one must call it by its correct name.

Which is why Liberal constantly mutilate our language. By changing the meaning of words the common man becomes confused and begins to believe what the Liberal says and denies the truth.

That would be a European alliance, not a U.S.-European alliance. So drop the whole farce of NATO and let Europe stew on their own. If they create their own alliance to replace it then that’s their decision.

The U.S. still has a role to play in any alliance to the extent that we have an interest in a free Europe (i.e. one not completely taken over by Islam).

And we do.

IMHo, we need to shut down NATO and bring both our people and equipment home before the European SOBs are crying and begging us to save them from the armed Muzzies insurgents taking over their cities after they let millions of them in.

Saving their asses from themselves twice in the last century is enough, let them save themselves in the 21st century.

The Balts (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia) would likely want to be part of that alliance.

And just how is NATO preventing that?

And we do.

NATO seems to annoy the President no end. So why continue in it? What is Trump hoping to accomplish?
