U.S. and Mexico discussing a deal that could slash migration at the border
Washington Post ^ | July 10, 2018 | Joshua Partlow and Nick Miroff

MEXICO CITY — While President Trump regularly berates Mexico for “doing nothing” to stop illegal migration, behind the scenes the two governments are considering a deal that could drastically curtail the cross-border migration flow.

The proposal, known as a “safe third country agreement,” would potentially require asylum seekers transiting through Mexico to apply for protection in that nation rather than in the United States. It would allow U.S. border guards to turn back such asylum seekers at border crossings and quickly return to Mexico anyone who has already entered illegally seeking refuge, regardless of their nationality.

U.S. officials believe this type of deal would discourage many Central American families from trying to reach the United States. Their soaring numbers have strained U.S. immigration courts and overwhelmed the U.S. government’s ability to detain them. The Trump administration says the majority are looking for jobs — rather than fleeing persecution — and are taking advantage of American generosity to gain entry and avoid deportation.

“We believe the flows would drop dramatically and fairly immediately” if the agreement took effect, said a senior Department of Homeland Security official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss negotiations with the Mexican government, which the official said had gathered momentum in recent weeks.

The proposed agreement has divided the Mexican government and alarmed human rights activists who maintain that many of the migrants are fleeing widespread gang violence and could be exposed to danger in Mexico.

The possible accord is likely to be discussed this week at high-level meetings in Latin America. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was scheduled to meet Tuesday and Wednesday with foreign ministers from Central America and Mexico in Guatemala City. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is due to visit Mexico City on Friday.

Why would we need Meheeco to go along with a policy if we decide to adopt it. And doesn’t Canada already have this policy ?

So, I guess this means that the new Mexican president was rallying his base but actually knows what would happen if he tried to send all of his country to Yanqui Land.

It would definitely help. This is about people who transit through Mexico, which actually maintains a very strict southern border of its own but has been letting people enter through it if they say they are going to the US. It also means stopping the smugglers (many of them connected with the Cuban government) who bring in people from outside of Latin America, mostly the ME and Asia, and drop them off in Mexico where they are allowed to proceed to the US border.

The whole situation is out of control, and one of the things that caused it is grandstanding Mexican politicians (not all of them leftwing by any means) who have always relied on anti-Americanism as a device to distract from their own failings and a platform to stand on before their voters. This is the case even when it means shooting themselves in the foot by destabilizing - even more - their own country by admitting and sending hordes of “asylum seekers” through Mexico to the US.

Notice the “activists” never like solutions, always want to perpetuate problems. God forbid someone not enter the United States illegally.

Talks like these are common sense on steroids. Which basically is the doctrine of President Trump. God bless him!

"..many of the migrants are fleeing widespread gang violence and could be exposed to danger in Mexico.."

And according to some of that same lot of "human rights activists", we're all buncha racist Nazi's.

Mebbe those "migrants" should stay put and improve their lot. d;^)

US officials believe this type of "third country" deal would discourage soaring numbers of Central American families trying to reach the US.......they are straining the US immigration courts and overwhelming our ability to detain them. Apparently the C/A's are looking for jobs — NOT fleeing persecution — and are taking advantage of American generosity (and the stupidity of liberals) to gain entry and avoid deportation.

Other agencies found some 100 countries getting rid of their impoverished.....sending them to gather at the Mexican border

Trump needs to follow the money. Is Mexico pocketing fees to let these these countries use their border to access the US?

Logic: Mexico might have a better chance at stopping its drug cartel and human trafficking problems if its criminal class couldn’t easily get in and out of the US.

Exactly, just more posturing. Mexico can’t afford it’s own welfare class, they certainly can’t absorb South America’s.

We wonder how many of the alarmed human rights activists are addressing the widespread gang violence in the home countries of the migrants.

Would it not be better to instill human rights in the home countries so the people would not have to leave?

I don’t trust them AT ALL.

AMLO says he is putting Mexican troops on the border.

They will be running interference for the cartels as they bust through our defenses. We know this because AMLO is in bed with the cartels. He serves them.

Anyone remember the 2014 incident wherein a Mexican military helicopter crossed into the US and fired upon our border patrol?

That was their military running interference for a cartel shipment.

Of course, our craven cowards in Washington, along with the complicit media, swept the incident down the memory hole.

This Texan remembers.

This is worth discussing—especially if we have less pleasant options to offer the Mexicans if they don’t agree... :-)

(did I hear “no more foreign aid”, did I hear “US troops crossing Mexican border”—yup, I thought I did... :-) )

"It would allow U.S. border guards to turn back such asylum seekers at border crossings and quickly return to Mexico anyone who has already entered illegally seeking refuge, regardless of their nationality."

That's fine. My only question is how much is this going to cost the American tax payer? You just know those looters running Mexico wont do it unless there's a hefty bribe involved.
