China matched President Trump’s tariffs on $34 billion of goods.

Since the total value China’s US imports is $135 billion, that leaves $101 billion untouched with new tariffs.

China would need to import an additional $99 billion of US goods in order to match the $200 of new tariffs. That would be about a 74% increase in US purchases.

China should pull the trigger and purchase $99 billion of US goods so they can levy new tariffs on it.

Also it matters what is being imported to each country to see their relative position. The US mostly imports durable goods, most of which have other sources in a pinch, or that we can make ourselves.

China, on the other hand imports a lot of food and fuel, including from us. They can't stop eating.
