Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) has reportedly raised more than $10.4 million over the past three months, placing him second among the top fundraisers this election season.
O’Rourke, who is challenging incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), told his followers in a video posted to Twitter that his campaign raised the enormous sum with 215,714 individual contributions.
The average donation was $33 over the past three months, he said.
“In the last three months, all of us together, without PACs [political action committees] or corporations, or special interests, have raised more than $10.4 million,” O’Rourke said. “That comes from 215,714 individual contributors, most of them from Texas, giving 15, 25, 50 bucks at a time.”
O’Rourke’s campaign already boasted massive fundraising, but the latest haul brings his cash-on-hand to $14 million, the Texas Tribune reported.
Cruz will reportedly announce raising $4 million over the same period of time, bringing him to $10 million in cash-on-hand, according to the Washington Examiner.
According to its latest report from March 31, the Center for Responsive Politics reported that 41 percent of O’Rourke’s contributions were small individual contributions of less than $200. Around 58 percent were from large individual contributions.
O’Rourke has said repeatedly that his campaign is not accepting PAC money. But, according to the Center, O'Rourke has taken in $35,265 for this election cycle.
"You have made something absolutely extraordinary happen in Texas," O'Rourke said, addressing his supporters. "Extraordinary because we can’t find many other Senate races that have raised this kind of money in a three-month period. We can’t find one in Texas — maybe ever — that has done this and to do it in this way, through small-dollar contributions — that's what democracy looks like."
Cruz has a slight lead over O’Rourke, with the latest polling showing the incumbent holding a 5-point lead over his Democratic challenger.

As a life long Texan myself, don’t be so sure of that.....until Bill Clements, there were no Republicans in office.....
You trust in polls? How did that work out in the last election? Don’t be so cocksure......Cruz is tainted, and Beto has momentum.....
Repeal the ill-conceived 17th Amendment.

This election will be very close, too close for comfort in my opinion....I hope Cruz wins, even though I do not like him anymore, and I say that as a conservative.
The biggest danger is for people to fantasize this is over, in the bag....overconfidence is a killer. I can tell you, Cruz is damaged among those who would normally vote for him
You know what is telling? You have at least 3 comments already from folks who state they will vote Cruz, even though they do not like him........that is a pathetic unenthusiastic endorsement if I ever heard one. Cruz is not well liked......it is more of voting for him to keep the Dems out......weak support at best.
I read somewhere that in other races, eg obama.... people would filter donations thru gift cards,would use phoney names and the reality was it was all from the multi millionaire rich just laundering their money...

Yep. I will vote for him in November, but only because he isn't being primaried by a better (conservative) candidate, and the alternative is unthinkable.

I think if Cruz takes his re-election for granted, he could lose. The polls are very close right now. Plus Texas is getting closer to being purple each month as massive illegal immigratikn continues and a massive influx of Californians into Texas. It could be a blue state by 2020 or 2024. It’s rapidly going the way of former red states Colorado and Virginia
There are people here who continually attack him even though he endorsed Trump and is on the Trump train as far as I can tell. Tell them to drop it.
