Ocasio-Cortez Highlights How Third-Party Quirks Can Muddle Elections

.....

Even in Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s district, the Working Families Party line was won by Mr. Crowley, who had secured that party’s endorsement. Bill Lipton, state director of the Working Families Party, said he immediately reached out to Mr. Crowley’s campaign to request that he vacate the line.

To Mr. Lipton’s chagrin, his campaign declined; Mr. Crowley will remain on the ballot in November. “You’d think that given the moment we’re in,” said Mr. Lipton, “that Democratic leaders would want to help progressive forces to unite.”

Asked about Mr. Crowley’s plans regarding the Working Families Party line, a campaign spokeswoman said only: “Joe Crowley is a Democrat. He’s made clear he is not running for Congress and supports the Democratic nominee in NY-14.”

In Mr. Crowley’s case, vacating the line is not that simple. The Working Families Party must go through a convoluted legal maneuver, essentially nominating the unwanted primary winner for another electoral position on the ballot — often one that he or she has little chance of winning, like a county clerkship in a region of the state dominated by the other party.

I found this interesting tidbit in an article about Ocasio-Cortez winning the Reform Party line in another district - with 9 votes!

The part about Crowley raised my suspicions. Perhaps he is being disingenuous in his claims? Yeah, he's not running, but if elected he will undoubtedly accept the victory. This is how dirty politics is played in NY. The machine will spring into action to make sure the voters know who to vote for.

That’s right, NYT. Call a huge part of your lunatic base who voted for this radical a “quirk” and see how fast the violent protests start.

The ‘quirk’ refers not to her victory over Crowley in the 14th, where she got 57% of the 27,000 votes cast, but winning the Reform Party line in the 15th with only 9 write-in votes.

Third parties work in NY and CT, because multiple endorsements are allowed. NY has a deep tradition of using them more effectively. In 1980, Al D’Amato beat liberal Republican Jacob Javits in the primary, but Javits had the Liberal Line. D’Amato beat Democrat Liz Holtzman 45% to 44%largely because liberals voted for Javits over the painfully shrill Holtzman, and most of his 11% would have gone to Holtzman.

Be great if she wins BOTH districts. The so-called ‘mainstream’ Democrats would be pulling out what little hair they have left.

Personally I don’t favor ballot-rigging schemes that limit your choices to just the Democrats and Pubbies.

New York congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D) accused Rep. Joseph Crowley (D) of refusing to concede the Democratic primary race and mounting a third-party challenge against her.
“[Crowley] stated on live TV that he would absolutely support my candidacy,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Thursday. “Instead, he’s stood me up for all 3 scheduled concession calls.”
