It’s sad to see small towns and cities failing. Given the high rate of crime and drug use that people have taken to, would there even be enough employable people for investing entrepreneurs who wanted to revitalize the place to draw from? Wonder what was key in Asheville’s resurrection?

Ashville's "secret" is that it is located in the mountains in an area with a traditional Scots-Irish demographic. It's not tobacco or cotton country, with the usual "residual problems".

People figured out it was a great environment in which to live. Then the hippies and artists moved in. Now it is just a traffic mess.
