I think we’ll need to replace one more liberal SC justice with an originalist before things start to turn around. I don’t see Ginsberg living much longer and Sotomayor’s health is in question and Breyer is getting old.

On the minus side, Thomas has said that he has no intention of dying in the seat, so I think he’ll retire soon because I don’t think he’ll risk staying on and Trump not being re-elected and then having to try to outlive the next maybe liberal president for two terms.

I see where you’re coming from - Thomas certainly doesn’t want to repeat the RBG mistake with Her Beastness in 2016. However, I think that with every week that passes Trump’s policies are being seen to work better and better, and many people in the middle are coming to grudgingly admire his skills (and even, a bit, his style). Trump is headed for a landslide win in 2020, similar to Reagan in ‘84 (and for the same reasons). No, Trump won’t get 49 states...but he’ll get 375 - 400 EVs. Thomas will, IMHO, resign at the end of the 2021 term so that his successor can be nominated without the controversy of an “election year” appointment. That’ll also be 30 years of him on the Court, and he’d have more than earned the right to hang up his cleats.
